Okay, guys, I've narrowed my build to two options...

Brownells commercial on HK 416 "commercial" tube (this is the stock on their XM177 clone, but an upgraded tube) or
    M&A milspec on milspec tube

What are the pros/cons of each? Which would you go with and why?

What are you planning to build?
I think all of the 700-series carbines could be found with Fiberlite stocks at some point during their production, although both the Fiberlite and the aluminum stock could be seen in the 700s. So if you are building a 723 or something I'd go with the milspec dimension M&A stock.

If you are building an XM177 or other 600 series, then the Brownells stock is going to bear a closer resemblance to the vinyl-coated aluminum stock of the originals, especially if you gloss it up a bit.

EDIT: Okay, you said you were doing a C8, that's right. In that case I'd take the M&A parts just because given the option I'd prefer a milspec dimension stock and receiver extension.

EDIT EDIT: the commercial 416 tube on Brownells site appears to have the slightly slanted back present on some other commercial tubes. I believe these tubes are usually slightly longer and tend to project beyond a standard CAR stock when fully collapsed.
Also, maybe it's a site glitch but when I looked at those 416 tubes just now they were priced at $90.99.....which is just plain silly.

Thanks, C10--funny, when I looked at the HK tubes they were only TEN bucks at AU. Build doesn't have to be a perfect clone, just shooting for "as close as I can get" to give the girlfriend something basic with iron sights she can use to shoot matches with me, while having a bit of "personalization" to reflect her Up North heritage rather than just an identical pair of M4geries. After I build the basic platform, if she wants to do the work of tracking down genuine Diemaco parts to swap on or ponying up the two grand for an Elcan optic, that's HER problem...

Huh, I just looked at AU's site, they still have them listed for $10. That's quite a price discrepancy.

The fact the tube might be too long to fit flush with a collapsed stock would still stop me from getting one though.

I got one of the last of the High Standard Commercial Tubes that Brownells had for my spare Brownells CAR stock, it fit well & all but I could not stand the length difference & slant cut end . I put the commercial tube into inventory and run that Stock with a Milspec tube on a Dedicated 22 M4gery for now. I think the M&A Parts stock kits are best of Non Aluminum Car Stock set ups ...

Bumping with a followup question, since you guys have me settled on M&A... Are there any good sources for repro recoil pads that fit these stocks? I'm not talking that nauseating Promag or Leapers crap with the fake "Army Ordnance" markings, hopefully something with the rear ribs for traction like on the Vickers C8.

    Reference pic from LAV's website:

Also, do any of you guys have any suggestions for how to dye black or FDE rubber? I already tried Google and came up weak on both of these.

New question: does anybody out there have any experience with the new B5/Brownells Milspec CAR?

No experience but if they're made by B5 Systems I'm sure they're good to go. I do have a M&A on my 733 clone and would recommend it as well.

Thanks--I know B5 is one of the "Big Two" for SOPMODs, and am debating between them and M&A, trying to decide if the extra fifteen bucks' value is there for the money. (Retro Rifles got struck from the candidates list, even if theirs is genuinely "Canadian Green" rather than OD, simply through non-communication.)
