Plausible optics for an M4 clone?

I've narrowed down some things on my M4 build, and now I need the Wisdom of the Crowd, particular preference for input from our members who were in the Rockpile in the early years, call it pre-2008.

Thinking is to go for the days before there were sufficient ACOG's for everyone--what all did you guys see in the field that would be plausible as unit- or private-purchase optics on a USMC M4 in combat around that time? I know several folks have mentioned Aimpoint PROs and the various M68's, I'd suspect the Elcan SpecterDR (SU-230) might have shown up and I know a lot of guys had Vortex Strike Eagles for LPVO's.

For an unmagnified (this is an A-frame FSB build, and I don't want to have to rip the optic off to switch to irons), short- to mid-range envelope, what all did you guys either see or use in-country around that timeframe that would fit the bill?

Aimpoint PRO was 2011 release and Strike Eagle appears to have came out in 2015.

Lol what are you talking about? I never saw a Strike eagle on a USMC rifle because they hadn’t been invented yet.

Your answer is the ACOG. Everyone had one as late as 2007 unless you were a POG.

    Thanks for the date-checks, JSB.

Sounds like I'm stuck with an ACOG, then.

I have a vortex spitfire 3x on my 6920 that I like. Great warranty on the vortex and don't cost an arm and a leg.

Nevermind, missed the clone part, carry on!

Aimpoint Comp M3, however the Pro is widely used and accepted in clone builds from my understanding.

No Military unit has ever thought about using the Strike Eagle.

Going back to the late 90s and early 2000 for us army you had a m68 cco. Special operations had the option for a tao1nsn acog, m68 and the Trijicon reflex sight.

I thought the Comp M3 was skipped for most military service? Seemed like it was the in between option no one selected.
