The crisis of refugees streaming into our country from Mexico and Central America will transform this country so completely that future administrations will have so many internal problems to worry about that we will eventually be disengaged from the international community. The collapse of the United States of America from the weight of the refugee crisis will happen whether or not there is a new Cold War, or a future war with China (both of which I doubt will actually happen). But we WILL see the US transformed into a Third World country maybe within our lifetimes.
Excellent topic to discuss doc.
Man, I do miss the cold war before that damn wall came down. Many say it's the same cold war today as it was back then and in some regards it is. There is still espionage being conducted against us, spies and manipulation. But in some ways, it's not your dad/grandad's Cold War. I don't believe MUD (Mutually Assured Destruction carries the weight it once did. Ego's and all the new threats that have emerged and the threats' ability to obtain weapons-grade plutonium that they didn't have it back in "the old days" presents a different Cold War picture. Then you add in the available of RDD material that can be used to make a dirty bomb, the threat picture is considerably different than it was back in the old days of the CW. I'm not sure I believe in a single threat. Think of all the muslim terror groups that used Russian equipment. Not all of them are using leftovers from the Soviet Unions failed attempt to invade Afghanistan. Russia just doesn't sell weapons and delivery systems to these whacko's they also sell intelligence, they sell knowledge as well. Bomb building knowledge. Parts and knowledge to build their own delivery systems. So I think someone may have mentioned a multi-pronged attack, that could happen. a China/NK, a Russian/Iran or a Russian/China, although I'm not sure how that would pan out, both are greedy and have their own world domination plans. But what I think is more likely is a single nation state attack with multiple sponsors, meaning funding and weapons sourced from a global power, but initiated from a single nation-state or the terror groups that have spawned out of the ME and Eastern Europe. I think multiple threats are very likely. Dirty bombs along with other terrorizing threats are almost a certainty. I don't agree with the premise that one poster made that it doesn't matter the threat, preps are preps. I believe it does matter because part of surviving isn't just having the stuff to survive, it is understanding the threat and their TTP so that you can counter whatever actions are initiated against you. I call it intel, but at its core it is knowledge. Someone said, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." (Hosea 4:6) This is a true statement. I don't think any war or battle has been won absent of some measure of reliable intel and knowledge of the enemy. I think thinking otherwise is short-sighted and naive.
Then we have our own issues here in the US. Which if/when escalated would give one of those nation-states or nation-state terror group(s) a great opportunity to add to the existing havoc and really do some serious damage.
Do I believe we face a thermonuclear war and invasion? Not sure, our country possesses so many resources, I can't imagine why one of the superpowers or semi-superpowers detonating a device that would render those resources unobtainable due to long-term radiation poisoning. I also think that the metric, "US is comprised of 5% of the world's population and possesses 50% of the world's firearms" (if that's a true metric) is a deterrent to any country looking to invade us. Certainly they would have to take into account the effects of American turned insurgent would have on any kind of invasion, so that is ranked low on my list of viable threat scenarios, so I don’t think a Red Dawn scenario to be likely in conjunction with a thermonuclear detonation. But with literally millions of sources for RDD, I do consider multiple dirty bombs a very viable threat or any non-persisitent chem-bio attack. Including water sources, attacks to our power-electrical grid, attacks on our supply chain capabilities etc. Specifically targeted cities could be a possibility for a nuclear bomb, but I guess I just don’t know where to rank that on threat list right now.
A very close friend once told me that the generation we see today that is over-the-top enraged at our administration and everything and everyone else presents the "New Terror Group". Because they have the capacity to be indoctrinated into terror groups (Socialism begets Communism) or ME terror groups. Add to that the technology and knowledge they possess to commit terror acts in their own backyard. Hacks into power stations, nuclear plants, compromising water sources or dragging us into a civil war. This I do place right at the top of my list.
So I believe wisdom should dictate we consider all the terror threats on the global landscape, prioritize those (That would be a good poll to post up.) and prepare accordingly.

I do not see the US becoming a 3rd World Country, as you say it.
(A third world country is a country NOT aligned with the NATO or the WARSAW Pact buy definition. Switzerland is a 3rd world county. Sorry, that is one of my pet peeves when that term is used wrong. )

The term that you are looking for is Developing nation or as I like to call them Sh!t Holes.
Before that happens there will be a change here. And by change it will look like the Balkans on Roids. Just like any system in history there will be a tipping point when the 2 sides will come to blows.

All right, then. Whatever terminology you wish to use, I see the US collapsing like Yugoslavia. First the government will find it impossible to hold onto control just like the Soviet Union, then the various factions will cause a breakup of the US into a loosely-connected units that may still call itself the United States of America, but it will be more like the loose confederation that the original thirteen colonies were. There will be strife and multiple conflicts as the country goes so completely broke that basic infrastructure and semblance of a federal system break down.
What happens after that, I don't know. Maybe Russia and China nuke a weakened America?

Financial collapse. This country would implode. When the smoke clears, we will be like Russia. We will have too many nukes to be messed with but no money to project force.

Interesting point. Certainly a China sponsor NK EMP would give China the opportunity to show up as our "saviors" in an attempt to fix the damaged infrastructure. Provide a lot of rice. Provide infrastructure parts & equipment. And obviously our people to run it all with the help of American sympathizers.
Reminds me of The Man in the High Castle, except China would have one half and Russia the other half of the country. NK wouldn't be a player because they would be nuked by then.

Personally I think Russia and China are creating a lot of the strife between right and left in this country hoping we will implode so they don't have to either nuke or invade us.
