Complete AR15 CAD assembly + Colt M16 Technical Data Package

Hey - figured you guys would like to have this if you haven't seen it already.

https://twitter.com/IvanTheTroll12/s...40479463182337 <- Link to announcement tweet

https://mega.nz/#!6YdRmIBK!qKFOLkmQG...HMoPtzmyx06VO8 <- Direct link to downloads

Me and a few pals worked to make a to-spec AR15 in CAD using the original Colt drawings of the M16A1/2 that we got via FOIA. We have included those drawings along with out CAD.

I'm sure you remember the Defense Distributed AR15 assembly being released. Anyone who bothered to open it could see it was horribly modeled, and missing parts.

https://twitter.com/IvanTheTroll12/s...44593134383105 <- This tweet chain sort of gives the rundown of what occurred to get the files to this point.

It doesn't make the AR15 3d-printable (unless you have a DLMS metal printer, then you can go to town), but it does provide a meticulous reference model for the AR15 in 3d CAD. If/when DLMS gets cheaper, this makes the AR15 something that can exist without being a physical gun - there's an AR15 everywhere there's a DLMS printer.

Plus, with the Colt schematics included - anyone with a machine shop can make AR15s/M16s to Colt's specs. This info has been available via FOIA since 1990, but it hasn't been shared online - 200+ pages of drawings of parts, dimensions, materials/heat treating specs, etc.

Enjoy! Let me know if y'all have any questions.

I'll also plug my older projects in the event they haven't popped up here:

An improved version of Defense Distributed's Printable magazine (with proper documentation): https://github.com/maduce/fosscad-re...e-Ivanthetroll

A way to bend your own 30 round AR15 magazine springs: https://github.com/maduce/fosscad-re...g-Ivanthetroll

I'm also working on some Glock stuff now that would let you print a frame and mill metal rails. You can find that stuff on the Twitter I've linked to above.

    Cheers!

As an amatuare in CAD (fusion 360) I am hugely impressed by the effort!!

As mentioned the DLMS required to turn this into a useable part isnt really there yet for the average consumer, but having the files available would make it much easier for other amatuers to modify the design and possibly make parts using other manufacturing techniques. For example if I could modify the reciever sets and still keep the barrel, BCG and LPK from an AR 15 you would have good commonality for a one off gun.

    edit:

got everything imported into fusion! At first glance it looks great. I think you may have done an invaluable service to future generations of 2A advocates.

*edited original screen shot cause it had PII*

Anyone else find it suspicious that a member who has 1 single post linking to a 3rd party hosting site, who goes by the name @ivanthetroll?

Almost like I made this account to share the news?

    Weird. I bet it's collusion!

Look at the Twitter. It's not like this is coming out of nowhere - there's a great big world outside of this forum!

Suspicion is like coffee, it’s a good thing, but you’ve got to watch your intake. You are GTG, but the memo hasn’t made it out to everyone yet.

After doing about 10 minutes of digging through the sub scripts, I am convinced this file is the real deal. All the componets seem to be there down to the buffer retaining pin and spring, as well as the fire safety slecetor spring and plunger. There is even rifeling in the barrel. The only part I cant confirm is the dimensions and tolerances, because frankly I dont know them off the top of my head. Here is another screen shot showing the reciever sets removed; and you can see the sub assembly lists on the left hand side of the screen.

Included in the files are the M16 blueprints - all the actual Colt dimensions that we used to make sure this CAD model is spot-on.

The barrel/rifling/chambering is even on spec. It's fun just to use a cross section tool and see how things fit together.

Thank you for your neverending work on this project. I think you have done more for the RKBA & 2A than most of the pro gun organizations out there asking for money.
