    I agree with those suggesting the SBR over the pistol caliber.

    Regardless of which you end up with, you can contact the FBI’s Ballistics folks at Quantico and request (on department letterhead) a copy of their most recent ammo tests. That will yield some good info on bullet performance through barriers including windshields which are hard on bullets.

    If you are deliberately doing felony car stops or vehicle assaults with a .45 cal UMP I'd really suggest you go to the 5.56mm weapon as soon as you possibly can.

    The sheet metal, beams, pillars, and glass of an automobile or pickup truck is by definition a barrier. Having shot at and through several cars to get to the tender bits inside I wouldn't deliberately choose a pistol (caliber) or sub if I have the option.
