The kid whole stole it was caught almost immediately, and later committed suicide. The guy who had it got in a horrible car wreck and they found my gun. I think I am going to call this gun Christine

If you do it yourself, don’t use steel wool. It will scratch the bluing. Use bronze wool from Brownells or Midway and kroil. I I used this technique on many ww2 collectible firearms where altering original finish hurts value. This will safely remove the surface rust without damaging the finish. The trick is light pressure and keep it wet with kroil.

I personally would clean it this way, use it for awhile then send it to a smith of your choice for a refinish and maybe some updates.

The wisest route would be letting Wilson have a crack at it, they maybe able to absorb some of the cost. Sending it to a third party is going to be very expensive.

Although I'm leery to keep it due to its track record. I'd have Wilson bring it back to a serviceable condition, then sell it. Bad juju.
