    New Gun: IWI Carmel

8 lbs 2 oz seems unnecessarily heavy for what you get. A pound heavier than a SCAR and .7 lbs heavier than a Sig Spear Lt.

I played with one at a LGS yesterday. Very well balanced.

I emailed IWI to post a manual of some sort about this rifle (full break down).

For $1750 MSRP, it may be a heck of a deal: adjustable gas block, chrome lined CHF barrel. It actually has a fairly decent factory trigger as well.

The weight is an issue, but when you hold it, it feels like it is 7 lbs. They may have beefed up the internals or something. The handguard feels great in the hands, so perhaps it was a good move on IWI’s part.

Yep, that’s exactly my takeaway on it. There’s one on gunbroker with a starting bid of $1,429 right now.

    IWI just emailed me back:

35 inch lbs for the handguard screws. From the pics, I still can’t figure out why this weighs more than my SCAR 16 with an extended handguard. I will ask about an armorer’s manual and plans for spare parts.

So you’re saying it isn’t as nose heavy as most piston guns? Interesting.

I can tell you that my 13.7” JAKL feels way more nose heavy than the Carmel. You’d swear it was heavier than it is.

Correct. It seems like the bulk in the back of the gun (stock and receiver) gives it balance. Even more so than a B&T APC 223 I’ve played with. Very comfortable and easy to hold on first impression. Seems to have a good cheekweld, but it’s bizarre that they did not install a QD socket on the handguard; there is one on the rear of the receiver before the stock hinge.

Hmm...so if I take it to the range on the weekend it would be a Carmel Sunday...
