Some of y'all got sand in your vajayjays.
Anyone who has read any history of the Korean War knows the role the Reserves played in plugging the dike. America also drafted folks during Korea:

Between the Korean War's outbreak in June 1950 and the armistice agreement in 1953, Selective Service inducted over 1.5 million men. Another 1.3 million volunteered, usually choosing the Navy or Air Force. Congress passed the Universal Military Training and Service Act in 1951 to meet the demands of the war. It lowered the induction age to 18˝ and extended active-duty service commitments to 24 months. Despite the early combat failures and later stalemate in Korea, the draft has been credited by some as playing a vital role in turning the tide of war.

A February 1953 Gallup Poll showed 70 percent of Americans surveyed felt the SSS handled the draft fairly. Notably, the demographic including all draft age men (males 21 to 29) reported 64 percent believed the draft to be fair.

(my note: not many said that about the VN draft)

Public protests in the United States were few during the Korean War. However, the percentage of CO exemptions for inductees grew to 1.5% compared to a rate of just 0.5% in the past two wars. The Justice Department also investigated more than 80,000 draft evasion cases.

The sand in my vajayjay comes from the fact that most Americans feel they have better things to do than serve.

Just looked up my draft number... 234. Funny thing is I was in the Army for a year and a half before they did the lottery for my year. (They took our Draft Cards from us at the FLW Reception Station.)

My Dad was in the Navy for two years before he got his Draft notice.

In college I was pretty well armed with quality stuff. I started talking to Wes Grant (MSTN) while I was a freshman in college (late 90s) and he steered me clear of cheap crap. For anyone who doesn’t know, Wes was essentially the first vendor of super high end AR15 kit...KAC, LMT, PRI, Colt at a time when the civ shooting market was just beginning to appreciate truly high end ARs. He was the very first to offer LMT, before LMT was really known commercially. I frequently remind him of his tutelage and thank him for putting me on the correct path. I avoided the neophyte pitfalls of garbage guns and accessories thanks to Wes.

One of the guys in the fraternity house behind ours (off campus) was a FFL/SOT and had a m249 and a few other MGs stored in his room at their house. Monthly Ruben Mendiola MG shoots helped maintain the urge for MGs. Good times. I wish I had maxed out a CC buying $2500 Colt M16s, $3000 MP5s, $1700 UZIs, $1500 AR15 DIAS, and $1000 HK sears back then. Oh well.

Seriously, you probably wouldn't WANT to serve with them.

Do you really want to be in a fox hole with Steve Jobs who thinks he knows everything about everything or do you want him back in the valley making tech shit that will improve military communications?

One of the worst things about Vietnam was draftees who didn't want to be there or those who opted to serve in the military than serve time. Can you imagine if you joined because you wanted to serve your country and you ended up with a bunch of social flunkies in your crew as replacements?

Think about the average person you see walking around staring at their phone all day, barely able to drive a car in traffic who thinks Bernie Sanders is the cure for the nation...do you really want them in uniform?
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

I don't believe I ever signed up with selective service, I joined on delayed entry (actually reserves) before my 18th birthday and was in boot camp two weeks after I graduated high school.

For two years, between the ages of 18-26, in the .mil or doing some other form of national service.

A lot of geniuses have served over the years.

I certainly would not want to serve with anyone who doesn't want to be there. It's like that in sports, work, whatever. So to that end, I absolutely abhor the idea of a draft. I have a little less indigestion over people who would choose to go in the military versus doing hard time behind bars, a lot of this guys got straightened out.

The whole reserves/national guard isn't entirely different argument altogether.

The comedian George Gobel, was actually a flight instructor during WWII. Listen to what he said about that to Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show 50 years ago! 19:00 mark.
