It goes both ways in most places. A few years back a guy bought a carbine stock with buttpad to replace the N stock on the FN shotgun (basically a Winchester 1300) he had and asked how to swap them out. The clerk looked at it a second and advised getting a hammer and punch to knock the pin loose and back the nut off. I mentioned pulling the latch down and sliding it off might work with no tools.

To tell on myself, I actually did the full disassembly method, but in my defense that was mid 90's so prior to seeing a printed copy mentioning it and pdf's in a few seconds weren't on the menu either as was the case during the time frame of the LGS story.

A lot of geniuses have served over the years.
Sure, especially works if they want to be there. But there are people who have no business being in the military and there are people who would be better off doing something else.

Also we don't have a draft for a reason. This isn't the soviet union, people are free to choose. If the military worked great for you, then that is awesome and we appreciate your service. But not everyone is suited to it and unless it is actually some kind of Red Dawn invasion service should never be compulsory.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

"No draft" is an illusion. If we didn't still have a draft in all but name, selective service and the associated penalties for not registering would not exist. We don't draft in peacetime, but we were lucky to barely get through the biggest deployments in Stan and Iraq without using it. Stop-loss is directly attributable to trying to avoid a draft. On the other hand, it makes the prospect of continuing an unpopular war more remote if politicians are forced to consider implementing the draft. If people thought student protests in '68 and '69 were bad, imagine what they'd be like with today's crop of SJWs.

I don’t think most people are familiar with the sheer volume of GS, contract, etc, personnel it has taken the past decade or two.

That is why we did not need a draft.

Plus massive amount of guard, reserve, and individual augmentation.

God dang, the "teeth to tail" ratio at height of Iraq/Astan with contractors and others was like 1:18. It was nuts. And that was without significant reserve, guard, or IA folks.

FYI the Tavor was designed for sand and to last 200 years.

Oh customer the other day drew a pistol from his hip holster and pointed it in my face.
