After doing research on 9mm 1/3x28 AR muzzle devices, it seems the best option is a birdcage or a linear comp. The birdcage has an appealing lower price. The linear comp has an appealing sound reduction to the shooter, but adds some extra length. What has been your experience?

Barrel length comes into the picture as well.
A 10"+- barrel on a 9mm AR9 helps subdue the sound signature on it's own.
That said, I wear ear pro whenever I shoot.

Frankly, I think one would need to be a GrandMaster shooter to notice the difference in split times between a Birdcage and a cutting edge Comp on an AR9.
There's not much recoil to begin with and unless you're shooting +P+/"Major 9" the gas volume is pretty skimpy to make a comp work in standard 9mm.

I have both Birdcage and Comp equipped 9's and really don't notice much diff in sound signature or rate of fire with the longer, 10" barrels.

That said, we all seem to like the latest/greatest/"Hi-Tech-ist".

I had the same questions as the OP, I came to the same conclusions as gaijin and ended up buying a Kaw Valley thread protector for $10.

So far I’m happy with it.

It’s on 16” barrel.

When my 'smith whacked the barrel (10.5") on my Colt, he simply reinstalled the OEM birdcage. Never had a reason to question that.

I will be running an 8.3" Ballistic Advantage and a 7" Larue.

The most benefit from a comp on a 9mm AR is that they help with the shot timers picking up the sound of the shots. They can be iffy. Beyond that they are just barrel weight.

Comps definitely do work on AR9’s. Not as much as 556, but nonetheless, still do.
