End of Watch made me physically ill

Training Day was and to some extent is a bit more realistic than people want to admit in narcotic policing

Also I will be “That Guy” and say Neverending Story because not only did it end it had a sequel

I actually had the end to The Crying Game figured out without having to see the movie. The "female" part was played by the same actor that played Ra in Stargate. Stargate was a movie I saw long before I heard of the Crying Game. So when I watched the trailer for TCG I knew immediately what the ending was.

Miami Vice: 2006. Worst ending! I Heard Jamie Foxx made a big deal about his stature about being a "Oscar winner" which forced production to re-write ending that could be filmed locally.

Heat: Where is Chris Shiherlis? Did he get away? Is he dead? He made off with a lot of money!

Titanic: I didn't think the boat would sink!

    Book of Eli

If it hadn't hammered on it at the end, the debates about whether or not Eli was blind would be raging to this day.

    Exclamation

    Saving Private Ryan. Absolutely SUCKED.

As Cpt. Miller is dying, he tells Ryan there on the bridge, "EARN this." "EARN THIS?!?!" Are you shiite'in me?!?!

So for the next SIXTY years, he AGONIZES over this redemption, for which he can NEVER repay - the reality of it gnawing at him day & night. So FINALLY, as an old man, he goes back to Normandy. And he stands before the silent cross marker of Cpt. Miller, from whence no absolution can come! So in desperation, he turns to his wife - "Have I been a 'good' man?!" And she LIES!!! "Yes - you've been a 'good' man," but his conscience knows BETTER! He's NEVER lived up to, "EARN this," and it's crushing his soul... and there the movie leaves us...

Script writers make lousy theologians, and clearly Cpt. Miller wasn't Lutheran, but all ya' hafta do, is change a few letters, and the movie has the best ending ever. INSTEAD of, "EARN this" , all Cpt. Miller has to say is, "ENJOY this."

ENJOY THIS! Your life has been purchased at a price you did not pay, and CANNOT re-pay; therefore, REJOICE... and ENJOY this.

So he comes back to Normandy with a clear conscience, IF also a heavy heart, being back there. He salutes Cpt. Miller's headstone. Maybe he cries a bit too. He hugs his wife - thanks her for standing with him through the good and bad all those years - and they walk down the beach, hand in hand, as the credits roll.

Yeah, I'm a confessional Lutheran, and I DETEST works righteousness in all its forms & flavors. So the last 5 minutes, killed the whole movie for me...

Or, better yet, he doesn't say anything at all, just looks into his eyes and leaves it up to Ryan what to make of the last 60 years. It's just an unspoken thing. Still would've worked fine with the "through the eye" camera trick.

I called BS on her throwing the expensive necklace in the ocean. Must have been early onset dementia.

Totally agree. Capt. Miller committed an utter act of cruelty.

Now I sorta hate the movie.

But, maybe by his and his wifes criteria, he has been a good man. But that is still some heavy shit to lay on somebody. Even if you foster care 12 kids, have six rescue dogs and a bunch of similar stuff, does that really "earn it." Basically to be even, you'd have to lay down your life for another.

I don't think Capt. Miller should have said "Enjoy this" because it would be hard to enjoy something earned at the great sacrifice of others. Perhaps most appropriate would have been to say "Remember us", which would have mostly sent both messages without an unrealistic obligation or debt that could never be paid or balanced. And it would be pretty much impossible to forget that kind of sacrifice anyway so it wouldn't be an unreasonable thing to say.

And instead of asking people "Am I a good man?" he could have gone around telling people what a "good man Capt. Miller and his Rangers" were and how "I'll never forget them or what they did."
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

So the perfect ending to that is when he asks his wife if he's a good man, she whips out the book he wrote about his unit and how they fought bravely, etc. He smiles at her and says, "At least the world will know what we all did."

    Fade to black.

Dang. I need to write screenplays.
