30 years isn't a very early 1911. Hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like a cast bullet... which would defeat the barrier penetration logic (in my estimation).
Looks like hill billy attempt at an exploding bullet if that is indeed a primer.

Yes it is cast, not FMJ.

In the 70's there was a company Velux or some such that sold a 10 pack of bullets they were jacketed hollow points with an embedded primer.
They weren't advertised for barrier penetration rather anti personnel rounds.
