Chronograph-ed a couple .380 factory loads
Test Conditions: About 90 degrees and the muzzle was about 7 ft away from the ProChrono.
Test Gun: Beretta M81FS with a new Browning BDA .380 barrel. (3.8 inch barrel)
.380 Fiocchi 95 gr FMJ (9 shots, 1 failed to read)
High: 995 fps
Low: 931 fps
Extreme Spread: 64 fps
Average: 965 fps
Underwood .380 "+p" with Hornady XTP JHP 90 gr bullets (5 shots)
High: 1207 fps (!)
Low: 1161 fps
Extreme Spread: 46 fps
Average: 1186 fps (!)
Strong stuff. Like other "hot" Underwood ammo's I've tried there were no signs of over-pressure. Unfortunately, unlike other Underwood loads I had three failures to feed out of about 30 rounds. (bullet went high) I have not fired ANY other JHP .380 loads from this gun so I can't say if it was the ammo or the just the gun.
I'm sure this ammo would beat-up an aluminum framed blowback gun even more than regular .380 ammo seems too. Use sparingly. Might be a good round to leave in the chamber. In fact I tested about ten rounds this way. (First shot Underwood, the rest FMJ) and didn't have any problems.
I also fired three rounds into packed mud. Found two, they expanded as much as an XTP will, sectional density would be poor, however. But they were movin' out for a standard-weight .380 load!
