    Real or fake?

When buying ammo from a individual how can you tell if the ammo is what they say it is? Especially if it’s not in a box, but on stripper clips in an ammo can. The reason I’m asking is I have the opportunity to purchase 1000 rounds of black hills 77 gr otm (mk262).

Sounds very suspect to me. Don’t know if Black Hills has their own head stamp. If not, there’s decent odds that Bubba loaded it in his basement. One thing’s for sure. Black Hills won’t warranty it without the box/lot information.

IIRC most of the MK262 I have seen used Win brass, obvious clues crimped in primers, Mod 1 had a cannalure pull a bullet and weigh/compare to a SMK.

Actually I just looked at some MK 262 Mod 1 and it was loaded in WCC 03 brass.

Post some quality 360 pics of the assembled cartridge, and/or pull one apart. Pic of the ammo can markings are good too. There will be clues, but not a definitive answer without provenance. Even if 262, origins may be suspect.

Almost any load using 77 gr OTMs will do that. As posted, pics are a good indication. It should be obvious that it's military brass (crimped/sealed primers and annealin iris visible)

I can't imagine any profitable way of faking M262. It'd be too labor intensive.

Midway has both the 77 SMK and TMK, which removes all doubt. The TMKs are blems, and save a little money.
