Mrgunsngear: Palmetto State Armory 10.5'' Nitride 5.56 AR-15 Pistol: Best Truck Gun?

I just purchased one of these:

As of this post I have not shot mine yet, but his review definitely made me feel more confident about it. I agree with most of his review and I'm impressed at the accuracy he got.

After unboxing I made some observations:

    PROS

    1. Barrel is chambered in 5.56. I'm taking their word for it. I understand some manufacturers that claim to have a 5.56 chamber actually have one closer to .223 despite markings. I can't vouch for whether this is true or not, but aftermarket builds always make me suspicious. So I just thought I'd mention that.

    2. Bolt is marked MPI, and the bolt carrier screws are staked (although not as aggressively as others I've seen).

    3. The blade type brace is marginally comfortable to shoulder. I realize a pistol is not really "intended" for this, but since some people will do that...

    4. I love the length. With a Surefire G2 in a VLTOR mount (Old School me!) on a MagPul MOE handguard the balance is just about right.

    5. The price was right: Less than $560 out the door for mine from the LGS.

    CONS

    1. The barrel is not chrome-lined. I need to look at the bolt carrier to see if it is, but since it was at the gunsmith all day today I didn't get a chance.

    2. The handguards are single heat shield even though they are the fat M4 type. They look like cheap commercial handguards.

    3. The rail on the upper is slightly out of spec. I had to tap a MagPul MBUS onto the rail with a rubber mallet. Also, my Aimpoint in American Defense quick detach mount didn't just automatically transfer to this rifle. I had to loosen the mount considerably.

    4. My example's receiver extension was loose and the castle nut not staked. My gunsmith is fixing this as we speak. I'll pick it up tomorrow.

    5. The flash hider looks as though it was not torqued on enough to really deform the crush washer as I'd expect. I may replace the flash hider anyway.

When I fire it I'll come back with more impressions (probably next week as I'm going on vacation), but that's my initial once-over. At this point I'm about 75% impressed with it, given the caveat that you may have to "fix" little things yourself.

Good luck with your new gun. I continue to feel like mfging has come such a long way between AR’s like this and $350 bolt guns with moa guarantees, it’s just nuts.

I have a stripped LMT 10.5 we run with iron sights, it’s just fun to bang on. I think it’s cool with all these pistol “ braces” making running these platforms NFA hassle free.

The accuracy seemed good enough, let us know how your gun holds up. Are you putting on glass?

I picked it up about an hour and a half ago.

I put the Vortex Crossfire that I sighted in for two different rifles so it acts as a kind of "control" to see if the zero changes significantly with the short barrel. Mrgunsngear's video pretty much settles the accuracy question already: it is more than accurate enough. So my test will be just to see what adjustments need to be made. As stated, the red dot was used on two different rifles without need of gross adjustment, so we'll see if that short barrel necessitates a significant change in zero. BTW: the bolt carrier is chrome lined.

Doc, are you using the Offset Mount, or the SM-I? I'm looking for a mount for a G2 I just bought on the EE, and hoping I can find a suitable tape-switch despite taping and re-tailcapping G2's being Yesterday's News a decade ago.

SM-CK. It's discontinued and hard to find but a seller on eBay had some a month ago still in the wrapper so you might check there. He advertised them as used but mine was still in the package.

I still use the G2 because I've got several.

Good deal on the bolt. For that price it wouldn't mater to me if the barrel was CL or not. Most of us have too many AR's to shoot out barrels regularly anywho. And stand-alone barrels can be had for a song.

Just because his barrel shot well, doesn’t mean that yours will. That’s one of the big gambling factors with PSA. I’ve had two - one that could shoot a 1” group at 50m and one that didn’t shoot better than 2 3/4. The latter was their nitride version too.

Also, having to adjust the zero for the optic isn’t necessarily indicative of anything. As long as it groups consistently, it doesn’t mean anything if the zero is a few clicks different from another gun or several.

Zero can change a good bit between to identical brand-X awesome rifles, so I don't know what you are trying to do here...

Yup, and that was the best one from that upper. I sold it after realizing that having two beater uppers was stupid with how little I get to shoot and how many good uppers I already have. The phosphate one was cheaper and has tighter groups so I actually really like that one for what it is.
