Love the 645/4506. Wish they still made them I’d like a nice da/sa pistol
A few guys in my old dept. bought those when they came out. Very reliable. I almost bought one too. I did get a S&W 4516-1 (commander size w/ flush hammer) as a BUG-seat gun for the patrol car.
I love those older stainless S&Ws but my God they were heavy. I wouldn't mind having one as a range-gun. They shoot very well.

First Semiauto hand gun I owned that would feed empty cases. Found this out at the qualification range. The LT did us a favor while we were setting up targets by loading our mags for us. He loaded and empty case in each mag to induce a malfunction we had to clear. Instead of a jam I got a click-no-bang.
JD', now that you say it, that was actually common knowledge back in the day. IIRC, my 645 would cycle empties.

The looks I got from the 1911 crowd were priceless.
So far, this gun has proven to be very reliable, despite a lackluster cleaning regimen.
This was one of my duty guns back in the early 90s. It was a bitch to carry, heavy as heck but accurate as heck too. I miss it.
I have a soft spot for some 2nd and 3rd gen full-size Smith autos. I carried a 4506-1 for court security when I felt like it - yeah, that SOB is heavy, but I had no doubt that it would work. They are the HK USP .45 of steel guns - literally bombproof. I've kicked around getting another one, but it would just be a range gun. My 4506 was a tack driver and had a pretty decent trigger, but I couldn't hit a barn door from 10 ft. with the 4566 Tactical I had.
I couldn't imagine toting that thing around every day. I've seen a handful of LAPD guys still carrying them when I've been out there.
