To reduce recoil on my Ruger556, I'm thinking of switching to a heavier buffer. In doing so, do I need to change out the spring as well, or can I just use the spring in there now? I have less than 100rds through the rifle as of now. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

If your really interested in reducing recoil get a good muzzle brake. This one works ridiculously well.

Buffer drives timing not recoil impulse.
VG6 Gamma is also a good choice.
Another alternative is heavier barrel profile, other weight in handguard, etc.

I currently have a Lantec Dragon muzzle brake. I was told by one of my enlisted friends a heavier buffer would help reducing recoil. Mine is not bad, just trying to soften it as much as possible for the Mrs/kids.Originally Posted by Kansaswoodguy

Depending on the specific gun, a heavier buffer can increase "pop"/recoil. I would never use anything other than a USGI/Colt SS spring. For super smoothness you can either regulate the gas with an adjustable gas block, or buy a 14.5 middy from Brave Company. The bravo 14.5 middies are the smoothest/softest shooting uppers ever.

Recoil reduction from a less than 1 oz change in buffer weight will be minimal. As was already stated, either increase the carbine's weight (unlikely to be appreciated by the wife/kids), install a very effective muzzle break (also unlikely to be appreciated due to increased blast), or install a soft recoil pad.

Well, a buffer will make very little difference unless you’re talking a highly over gassed 14.5 pencil barrel M4 configuration... are you?
A VG6 Gamma muzzle brake and CAGE device together has great true/felt recoil and much lower perceived recoil due to the sound and blast reduction.
A 22lr conversion has much lower recoil.

I'm probably going to go with a different recoil pad. Thank you guys for the advice. It made me do a little research instead of just blindly following friendly advice. Here's a pic of what I have.
