I agree having specific mags or labeled at the very least. I also like to keep ammo in their boxes but a string of ammo cans with loose ammo is easier when going to the range.

Bringing a 300blk with your 556 to the range with some friends could be disastrous lol. Everyone starts loading mags and then I'd sweat some bullets.

Round Chambered. When I pulled the trigger, most of the energy when down and out. Buldged the upper and lower and peeled the Bolt Carrier Open like a banana peel. Interestingly enough, the bullet extruded and exited the barrel. Never found it.

I'm another that uses Lancer mags for 300 B.O. and lime green duct tape to mark 300 B.O. magazines. It's a low volume round for me, I can shoot 2 or 3 times as much 223/5.56 for the cost. I got it to use for deer hunting mainly.IMG_20190806_134348.jpg
I do have a method to keep them apart, straight magazines and Lancer's and only have out 5.56 or 300 not both. In fact I've not shot any subsonic in mine.
Ned I read that article and had some of the photos on my old phone as a reminder of the kaboom effect on 300 though 5.56 barrel.

So I just deal with a louder shot from a 5.56 / 762x51 or decreased terminal performance from a 9MM PCC.
You got me thinking on 7.62x51 and it would appear .338 Federal and .358 Winchester (with some bad luck) may be able to make a .308 (the parent case) Kaboom.

If any of you ever see "The NRA Handloaders Guide" they published in the late 60's to early 70's (perhaps earlier and later too?) grab a copy. Lots of good historical info plus a chapter or 2 on wrong chambering screw ups plus cartridges that will lodge in the bore and so on.

Is the problem that 300 black out can fit in a regular 5.56 mag? I am considering getting a 9in 300 upper and I have seen the screw ups but I never thought it was THAT easy to mix rounds. How does that happen? Genuine question. How do 300 blackout rounds make in into a pile of 5.56?

Wow, total loss there. Depending on the setup, that could be a very expensive mistake! The more pics I see of this and close calls the more I'm content with only running 556.

You can chamber a 300 in a 556 gun. To your second question of how does 300 end up in a pile of 556? No idea - user error. There guns, they are inherently dangerous. They should be respected and treated with care. That goes for handling, cleaning, storage, and the storage and organization of ammunition.

Yes, they are used in standard 556 mags and use everything the same as 556 including bcg. Only difference is in the barrel. 300 blk will chamber and fire in a 556 barrel- just explode. It's very easy to look over a 300blk round when loading mags if one has slipped in there somehow- someway.

I'd you are going to be running 556 and 300blk you have to take extra precautions and label everything, be very cognisive when loading mags that a 300blk doesnt slip in there somehow.

You best option is keep ammo in boxes and not loose ammo in cans and make sure you use specific mags labeled different than your other 556 mags.
