Their tests seem to indicate that AR-pattern rifles are more resilient in the face of mud and sand then popular urban legend would have us think, as ARs have typically performed very well in their tests....but I also think that if you test enough ARs in the mud, eventually one is going to fail because there's no way of consistently controlling and repeating exactly where the mud goes into each individual weapon and how much gets in. I dunno as the MR556 being a piston gun had much, if anything to do with it.

Obviously once crud gets in the chamber or locking surfaces it is game over till cleaned. The tests just show most claims about reliability are not based on actual observations.
