    Tape Test And The Mil

Will, you’re talking about the black chick that’s ripped, right?

I don’t know anything about the science behind it, but you don’t have to to know that it’s bullshit. IME, 40% of people that have to get taped are in really good shape with a lot of muscle mass. 30% are in the middle and could definitely use a better nutrition and/or PT program but are probably only a few pounds away from being solid, and the other 30% are fat as shit and an embarrassing sight in uniform, but pass because the method sucks. I don’t know for sure, but I’ve always heard that if you have a fat neck, then you can get away with a sizable gut because it’s more about proportionality than anything else. I’m speaking from relative experience, I’m not MFT qualified but I’ve had to get taped ever since I destroyed me knee and have been in that middle group I mentioned. I’m not proud of it, I’m just saying that I’ve seen it more first hand now that I have had to get taped.

Here’s the other part of it though - these standards aren’t new and anyone who has been in for more than a year should be very aware of them. While it would be annoying to have to cut muscle mass or prevent if from building, I doubt she (or anyone) can argue that she didn’t see it coming. I struggled to walk for five months and couldn’t run for over a year. Pair that with eating like shit and a lot of beer because I handled the injury very poorly, I could easily see the consequences coming and even then, it wasn’t over night.

I know the other branches do it differently, but not to what extent.

Not sure who you mean, but I would not call her ripped, but thick built naturally but clearly in good condition, and training vids I have seen show she'd embarrass some men in PT. Her build would suggest she will always struggle to pass the tape test.

    AR 600-9 governs tape https://armypubs.army.mil/ProductMap...PUB_ID=1004922

FM 7-22 (old FM 21-20) Covers APFT https://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR_p...C1%20Final.pdf, not updated yet for new ACFT which is covered by a CALL handbook currently https://usacac.army.mil/sites/defaul...ions/18-37.pdf.

Basically you take your APFT and then height/weight measurement (tables are in the AR). If you fail HT/WT then you move to tape test (procedures in AR). If you fail tape then you are a no go, regardless if you passed the APFT.

The system is screwed up, if you pass the APFT then that should be it. You fail the APFT then move to HT/WT and/or tape; then flag the Soldier from there. I have plenty of PT studs that have to get taped because of HT/WT, they all do neck workouts to make sure they are a go on tape test.

Same for the Navy and Marines when I was in. About 30% of the Marine units to which I was attached failed ht/wt because the Marines were built like brick shithouses; of course, they taped fine, and they killed the PFT. A few were legitimately overweight and failed the tape. It was way worse when I was in the reserve, especially for the WMs.

Depending on what was going on in the world (full war where they were trying to keep everyone vs post-war draw-down) decided your fate: one failure of anything, 'probation' (i.e., fat boy program), failed the next (of anything, you were out. Or, you could be on the fat boy program for 3 years before any action.....

Almost 22 years in, been taped most of my career. The bigger your neck, the more it skews the calculation in your favor.

Are you suggesting that someone so inclined could 'game the system' by concentrating an exercise regimen on bulking up the muscles in that area?

Yes, I'm absolutely suggesting that Lol. My skinny ass neck has almost landed me into a flag a number of times. Especially when the person doing the tape test pulls tight on the neck and loose on the waist. When I did ALC I was 2% over. My retape I was still 1% over. Fortunately for me, the course manager at that schoolhouse decided I had been inadvertently counseled on an obsolete form. I therefore got another retape. I restricted my diet so severely over the next 5 days that I lost 9 pounds and a magic 4 inches on my waist. I think the person performing the tape test was a major factor.

^I've had the tape falling off of my waist before. I've also "lost an inch" on my neck between my unit and the schoolhouse before. It brought me to just under the allowable limit. I've just accepted it as a part of the bigger picture.

    This is ridiculously accurate.
