In search of a WWII movie

I'm trying to remember/find a WWII movie I saw as a kid. The story is about a lone American vs a lone Japanese stranded on inland trying to kill each. I can barely remember it but it was not Hell in the Pacific with Lee Marvin and Toshirô Mifune. I think it may have been black and white. One thing I recall was the American got a nasty leg infection from a cut on a bladed booby trap while climbing a tree the Japanese setup for him. Any helps would be appreciated.

Is it possibly "The Last Bullet" (1995) with Jason Donovan?

    It's much older than that.

I dig that movie but they didn't buddy up like that or like Hell in the Pacific.

That would actually be Hell in the Pacific.

Enemy Mine is basically a remake of Hell in the Pacific just in space.
