Poll - which 7.62 "heavy" barrel? (non-CQB rifle)

Not just a bench-shooter, but a rifle that can used for hunting (with a padded strap, of course!).

How much for hunting? I have the 18" and it's heavy as hell. I'd not want to carry it in the woods more then once a season.

The 18" should be good at punching paper out to 600-800yds or so, though the 21" would be better for velocity.

They are both going to be heavy as hell, so I did not vote until you tell me how much hunting.

Dude, 18" is all you need. My bolt gun is 18", and I would never build an AR10 over 18".
I have shot mine out to 920 consistently hitting when the wind is calm. 3 extra inches of heavy barrel steel is still F-ing heavy. Fluting doesn't make a huge difference either.

Dude - 18" - I went to an M1A Scout and even have my main AR10 in an 18" config. From my perspective, I cannot see the benefit of 21" - not needed in my area of recreation.

I voted for the 18"!!! Just have it fluted also!!!!!! 308 rifles in the AR family are very heavy for hunting, however, my uncle used to use his HK 91 carbine (collapsible stock and I think it was a 16" barrel) for taking deer in Alabama!!

Out in the West where 400 yards shots are not uncommon I would prefer the 21" even with the extra weight.

18 is plenty for 400 yards. That should be great for your hunt.
