    9mm PCC Noise Level

I have an 11" 9mm AR which is in "mid-build". I took it to the range mounted to my pistol lower and fired a few rounds single shot to get a feel for it. My 11.3" 5.56 is louder, but I have pretty significant hearing loss so I cannot really tell how much louder.

Is a 11" 9mm ear safe? I assume no, so will foam earplugs or muffs be enough protection? I am doubling up (plugs, muffs) when I shoot my 5.56 pistol. I use either one or the other shooting handguns or 16"+ carbines/rifles.

These may seem like dumb questions, but I have searched and cannot find a dB level for longer barreled 9mm guns. I am trying to keep the hearing I have left.

    Thank you
    Andy

Longer 9mm barrels are quieter at the range. I wouldn't say earmuff free but they do sound less obnoxous.

Wear proper ear protection even when firing .22LR rifles.

Not at all. Certainly not as loud as 5.56, but still not hearing safe.

Through my experience using suppressors, longer barrels gives higher velocities. There is a louder sound.

Thank you for answering my poorly worded question.

    Rifle>pistol>pcc

Ppc is like a pistol but quieter and further from your ear. Muzzle device will influence it as well.

Mine has a flash can. I was planning on a thread protector only, but to me the barrel was a bit too short for a 10" rail.

FWIW Andy; our PCC's (10.5" barrels) with Flash cans are quit enough it's difficult for shot timers to record shots.
Not saying I'd use zero ear pro, but they are substantially quieter than a handgun- per MegademiC.
