First Impressions: Colt AR6951 9mm Carbine

I owned a Colt 9mm carbine for several years. The most accurate load was Winchester +P+ 115g JHP. The +P+ shot impressive 100 yard groups for an iron sight 9mm carbine. Federal 124g FMJ shot decent 100 yard groups, which were twice as big at 4".

I never saw good accuracy with projectiles heavier than 124g.

I have a few Colt 9mm’s 6991(10.5 inch barrel) in similar and full auto and an DOE RO633 7.5 inch barrel in simi. All 3 are amazing. ASC and Metalform mags work well with FMJ, Flat Points and JHP’s of all weights.

I found the hotter the ammo, the more reliable it is when dirty.

Great purchase Great freakin price man!!! I paid a grand for a 6450 20 yrs ago!!! That was when Colt knuckled under Once Again and was selling to LE Only!!!

Observations after several range trips:

1. Q4318 NATO seems to be made for this gun. Accurate and reliable. 115 grain standard pressure stuff works too.

2. 147 is too weak to reliably cycle, and is very inaccurate.

3. Blowback action means gun and magazine get very dirty even after 100 rounds. I haven't run it hard, but it could be that if you keep it wet, it'll run dirty. It did start life as a SMG , after all.

4. Recoil definitely is higher than M193 in a 6920. Certainly not enough to be a problem, but noticeable. Maybe this is why the SMG version never really caught on.

5. It's quieter than a 9mm pistol, and much quieter than a M4. I wanted a carbine to replace the shotgun for home defense (30>7) and I thought the flash and blast of my 6920 would be too much.

6. Metalform 32 round magazines are $23-25 if you look and are OEM. They work 100%.

7. A Lula loader is essential.

8. I have not tried any hollow points. Any of y'all have experience?

9. Key point: AR6951 is an AR and as such requires zero retraining. Good if the door goes crunch at 2 a.m. It's handier than the pump shotgun and holds many more rounds.

Yup All this with me and my 6450......147gr and the twist Colt uses just no work. I could Not hit a clay pigeon at 15yrds and destroyed them with 115/124!!

Recoil is Chunky for sure with So Much mass moving

JHP.... no worky for me in my 6450 Or my 10.5” Colt upper build.....

And .... yes get a loading tool or calus up boys and girls!!
