Seems like first you have to decide are you building something mainstream or you allowing for SOCOM variants and individual variation?
Remember there was probably a thousand Joes and Marines carrying routine stuff for every cool guy.
Which most likely means M-68 and ACOGs, which is largely still true now. At least for Army line units.
Any variation with a Joe was just as likely to be something picked up at the PX or Ranger Joe's as some optimal carefully selected optic. I'll defer to the experts who were there on specific unit purchases.
An Aimpoint Comp M2 or pro is awfully close to an M-68. Inexpensive and a reasonable optic in its own right.
You have a little bit more money, same for the ACOG.
Put another way, either of those optics would not be out of place for many homage builds. But not having some of the other issue stuff (lasers, etc) typically used would be out of place.
I'll never do a clone, and the closest I get is wanting to have a reference'ish M4. Which for me is a largely box stock 6920 with a carry handle. I'll probably put a Colt 14.5" inch pinned barrel on it. If I can find an accurate rail that's not stupid expensive I'll probably do that as well.
To me it's a bit refreshing to shoot a box stock 6920 in an as issued form factor. They're just effective. Although my IN captain son has currently has no nostalgia interest, I am sort of preserving what he uses with line units in case that changes down the road. But if not, it's still fun to shoot. And surprise folks who are convinced you need a custom build with a ton of accessories to get hits.
I also regret not building a musket (A2) while issue parts were cheap and more available.
Main point is, I'm trying for something you COULD plausibly see in a basic 0311's hands in the field, rather than the exotic "Cool Kids" stuff that most cloners want to build--as you say, "something picked up at the PX or Ranger Joe's" and paid for out-of-pocket as an improvised solution. I just saw a KAC M4 kit for $180 bucks or so, if I can figure out where I'll post it in Stick's deals-and-finds thread.
Sounds like ACOG, M2 or PRO it is--I was really hoping the PRO would work because 1. it's a lot more affordable while still Good2Go gear, 2. it sets a common spec across both builds minimizing the adjusting in case of an "oops wrong gun" moment and 3. I don't have to rip the optic off to transition to fixed irons and then fight with re-zeroing on reinstall.
You really have to ask why Conservatives have guns? Because Liberals block freeways, burn cities, throw Molotov cocktails, loot, turn over cop cars, and think this behavior is Socially Acceptable.
