Springfield Professional Custom 9mm thoughts?

I've been doing the research on the higher end 1911's. I carried a very custom 1911 from 1990 till I was issued Glocks in 1999. I sold my Colt and bought all in on Glocks. Still carry one of some sort every waking day of my life.

Two years ago I bought a Springfield EMP4 and it's been reliable and fun but it's kinda like a 3/4 1911. Fast forward and I've been going all in just because they're fun and remind me my roots, what I carried as a teenager (Dads) in the field, kept for home defense as a young adult and carried on duty as a youngish cop.

So, I bought a Colt CCU in 9mm. I liked the feel and weight. It's funny that when I started I made bun of the guys that carried the N frame Smiths. This thing is heavy, not sure I'd carry it off duty but it's comforting and seems to run well with the rounds I've put through it thus far. So I ordered a Colt CCO.

So I'm looking at the higher end 1911's now. Since I only buy 9mm ammo now I prefer to stay with it. But for near three grand it better work. So, ideas? With the rail or not? I tend to not prefer the rails and I know holtsers are easier without it. I also like thatthere's not a year or two wait time.

I own the SA Custom 1911 in 9mm, it runs great. It is shipped with ( I think ) Tripp mags. Does not lock back with Wilson mags. Don't buy spare Wilsons. Gun is great. I bought a Dan & Wesson Valor in 9mm. For a while they were very cheap at like $1,200 ish on GB. Look at the pro and D&W guns. Also I own a SA Lipsey edition with rail that is awesome. Grey and black. Look out for those too. Best of luck the 9mm 1911's GTG.

SA custom shop has done excellent work for me on 3 different pistols. I've never gotten a complete SA Pro Custom. But I would bet it's of the same high quality and good to go, their reputation is stellar and my experience of their high work quality has been so positive, I'd have no problem getting that pistol you are considering.

If you are still looking around, I'd also consider Wilson, Guncrafter, and Cylinder & Slide pistols in 9mm. All have interesting and unique offerings. I own a C&S 9mm Commander and it has been outstanding quality and attention to detail. If you're going to carry the thing, C&S has a lightweight 9mm Commander at about 25oz that looks like something I'd be interested in. If you decide to go easier on the budget and this is for carry (versus range or HD gun), DW has three commander-sized lLW options that I'd check out myself if shopping around: the Vigil, the ECP (my fave), and the TCP (which has a rail if you go that way).

On rails: controversial subject for 1911 doods. My pref is not on anything I would carry (simplifies holster issues and keeps it slim), but I have no issue with rails in general. I'm looking around to get a 5" railed 9mm eventually--such as the DW Specialist--to use stock as a range/comps gun, and for HD.

The professional doesn't come with a undercut trigger guard (what I assume you mean by High cut front strap) because the FBI didn't spec it that way. Now for their other pistol's, after having spoken with Dave Williams on custom work, he does not care for undercut's so that is probably why SA pistols don't have them. Me personally, I love them, and have had the Colt style done to 2 of my pistols by SACS. I also prefer SA high cut checkering vs their std checkering.

I have a .45 model but some of my observations might help. It did not run out of the box. It was VERY, VERY, VERY tight. It still is. I had to send it back to Springfield (on their dime if I recall) and they loosened it up. That was annoying, but what I was left with was a hyper accurate and reliable .45. I don't like rails on my 1911s (for purely aesthetic reasons, I admit it, I care about such things).

The Professional is finished to absolutely custom shop level. I used to have some Novak custom and I have looked at stuff from LAV and super high end Wilson Supergrades and the Springfield was right there (although its general style is out of date).

Honestly, if I was looking for a 9mm, I would get a Wilson. My Wilson 9mm commander has never malfunctioned, and I have shot about 1000 rounds through it at this point, including about every variety of mainstream hollow point (GS, GD, HST HS 115-147gr). I would probably get the Wilson just to avoid the million round break in.

I have the 45 model. It has exceeded my expectations greatly. Better shooter than my Baer and Wilson CQB- at least in my hands

That being said if I wanted a 9mm 1911 I would go for the STI 2011 line.

I think the Pro Model from Springfield's Custom Shop is still one of the best offerings at its price point. I have a good deal of personal experience with the 45ACP version, less so with the 9mm but I've shot one enough to know that it is every bit as good as the large bore sibling.

That said... just as other have mentioned it would be worth you time to look at a Wilson CQB in 9mm as well. Both guns occupy the same basic price but you may find it worth the time to look over the features between the two in order to find out which may be better suited to your needs.
