My question is are they buying full auto's or is this just trigger failures? Adams Arms started out making piston conversion kits for DI rifles, I never was too impressed with them.

"The first batch of AR-15s ordered from the Odessa-based manufacturer by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office had some trigger problems, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said. Then, in later batches, a few rifles switched on their own from semi-automatic to fully automatic fire."

I'm guessing the deputy-in-training drank the HK416 koolaid, but knew that his department would never spend H&K money on their rifles. So Just As Good As.

These are piston guns? What is the attraction with piston guns? The Stoner action works, it just plain works. As long as you keep oil on it and sand out of it, it works.

I couldn't read the news article linked because I don't subscribe, but it appears that they bought 309 of these things. Must have cost them half a million dollars. Agreed: why didn't they just buy Colts?
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the concept of piston ARs. Just because Stoner's design works doesn't mean manufacturers can't look for ways to make it even better. That could be by coming up with a piston design, or by tweaking the DI system.

The problem is not that they went with a piston, it's that they went with an Adams Arms system. They're less than reputable. If you look at the system, it's basically a clunky, poor man's LWRC. If they really wanted to do a piston AR and didn't want to shell out money for HK416s, they could have gone for some equally good and less expensive options like the LMT MRP or PWS rifles.

Guys, hate to tell you, but, this stuff happens all the time.

You have what they call 'gatekeepers' - people who are perceived to be SME's and are positioned to influence purchases and practices. Sometimes they have the best intentions, other times they have their noses so far up someone's fourth point of contact they suffer cervical spin injury if their 'mentor' turns quickly.

You can't tell me that none of your places of employment have such people.

This thread would have been much more meaningful if it had simply reported 'hey guys, the Pinellas(?) County SO just had a bunch of problems with Adams Arms, instead of delving into the perceived mental capacities of the folks involved.

    Bro.

99% of this forum are posts by those sharing the same limited mental capacity of procurement folks who buy Adams Arms.

    “Just as good as”

“I want these magazines even though I know those magazines work better”

    “Milspec means lowest bidder”

    “Better than the TDP”

    Etc etc etc....

Taking the opportunity to point out exactly what happens when some new guy on M4C who refuses to heed our advice and buys a shitty rifle anyway plays out on a department wide scale is not uncalled for.

I don’t own stock in any gun companies. I don’t make a dime or profit or benefit in any way whether everyone buys Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense, Adams Arms, LWRC, or Rock River.

I only recommend what I’ve used and what I know works based on quality of manufacturing and built-to specifications because I want people to be safe and not waste their money (it sounds pretty lame, but it’s true. Aint no hidden motives going on here)

The right information is everywhere. So when someone goes out and makes a stupid purchase based on internet hype anyway, they need to be called out.

He makes a cogent point about “gun guys” being the gatekeeper to legit gear

Most police chiefs are fat politicians who just donÂ’t wanna get sued or leave the office. So some lardass gets up in there and starts playing god with gear.

We need ARs lets just get some Colts

“Them Colts is bullshit! We need rando fly by night companies guns so they will put us in an ad. They even got a Green Beret modeling their guns so you know they are good!”

We need duty pistols. Lets just get some Glock 17s with weaponlights

“Them Glocks is bullshit! Tactical Tupperware! We need a MAN’S gun. We are gonna buy a buncha .40 Sig P226s because Navy SEALS!”

SWAT needs some decent fatigues. Lets get something green or tan so we look professional but wonÂ’t roast while we sit around and wait

“BULLSHIT! We need Multicam or better yet Multicam Black. Our SWAT IS LITERALLY DELTA FORCE!”

We need suppressed weapons for clan labs. Lets get some 300 blk and good cans

“BULLSHIT! We need MP5SDs because we are literally SAS now!”

    Oof

A little bit of common sense vetting saves a lot of heartache and money

HK416s are pretty sweet though but not because of the piston.

Would totes buy a n HK DI gun.

The HK 308 isn’t quite as good as my SR-25 but then its heft does make it not bad at all to shoot.
    The triggers though rule.
