    China's Pig Ebola

    https://www.vox.com/2019/6/6/1865546...g-ebolahttp://
An outbreak of African swine fever, a highly contagious disease that’s been called “pig Ebola,” is ravaging Asia’s pig industry with no signs of letting up.
The current outbreak of the virus, which kills almost all animals it infects, began in China in August. Since then, some 22 percent of the country’s pig herd has been lost to the disease and to culling, Christine McCracken, an animal protein expert at Rabobank, told Vox.
African swine fever is also now spreading in several countries neighboring China, including Mongolia, Russia, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The map below shows current outbreaks in Asia, as reported to the World Organization for Animal Health, or OIE.

Earlier we had a pretty good thread going about Impeachment at about 440 we drifted a bit in to the current trade agreement with China and how it relates to food. I thought I would look in to that a bit and found the above.
China has roughly more than half the pigs on Earth and they number roughly 700 million and it's looking like they will have to cull 200 million of them before the end of the year.

African swine fever is not harmful to humans and is unlikely to become zoonotic -- pass from animals to humans -- in our lifetime, says Dirk Pfeiffer, an expert in infectious diseases at City University of Hong Kong. But the most virulent strain of the disease is almost 100% deadly to pigs.
The Chinese government has set up epidemic zones across the country, restricted the movement of live pigs, and closed live pig markets in affected areas. Pfeiffer said that if not brought under control, the outbreak could ruin millions of small pig farms across the nation.

And that's what will bring China back to the table to negotiate.

Well that explains the progress being made on a trade deal for US farm products.

Viet Nam has actually been hurt worse by this. It would appear that they've lost more to pig ebola.
They are blaming farmers feeding kitchen scraps.

I'm surprised this is being reported especially coming out of China. Figured the would have muzzled that news. Hard to say just how bad it has hit China since they aren't the best at reporting the truth not to mention finding out what is going on out in the country side.

Educated people in the business and government have been discussing this for months. It is not new nor novel news. It is well understood that it will be endemic inside the country and difficult to contain to China.

The likelihood of the US-China trade in agriculture makes the swine fever likely to come to the US. Any trade deal will increase the opportunity for swine fever transmission to the US. Anyone with a cursory understanding of the US pork industry understands how fast the US supply chain will be compromised.
