My Dad remembered the serial number of his basic training M1 into the 1980s. He joined the Army in 1958.

I had A1s in Basic (86) through Desert Storm (90-90) and then A2s until I left Iraq in '05. I could not tell you a single serial number any more.

I can't remember the rack number of mine, let alone the serial number.

FN got a contract in 1988. By mid 90's FN parts were showing up for sale and driving people nuts in much the same way PSA FN produced parts do.

Good read about Colt. Really like their 1911s and ARs, but they have been hard pressed to do anything else. It took them forever to figure out that people still wanted revolvers, and past efforts at diversification (the Colt 2000...) have fallen miles short of perfection or innovation.

This brings back a lot of memories of boot camp and the M16 A1 issued to me back in 1987. May be it time to build a clone of it now that I am retired.

I would say so. I was issue my first M16A1 back in 1978 at Parris Island. I have built a series of M16A1 clones spanning from 1967-1982. The only thing about building a clone of a M16A1 is finding all of the correct (or close to correct) parts in stock. One thing for sure, you need to have deep pockets.
