    Vintage Boot Camp M-16

My dad posing with his M-16 in front of his barracks. He qualified "Expert" with the M-16 and the M-14. -Ft. Jackson, S.C. 1970

Here is a clone I built of a late 1967-1970 M16A1. Note the absence of forge codes. Forge codes did not appear until 1972. Also, note the use of the D type stock as the E type did not show up until 1971.

What I carried for all four years as an Army grunt myself (see sigline). The Marines actually got something before the Army did: the M16A2. We had A1's, which by the early to mid 80's had all been arsenal refinished.

I acquired an arsenal refinished upper assembly several years ago Ohio Ordnance Works. It has an early 603 upper (XM16E1/ pre-1972 M16A1 - no forge codes, only proof marks) with a SAK replacement barrel. It had been refinished in black. I mated it to a black anodized Nodak Spud A1 lower.

I love that. Would love to find something similar.

The classic design is the best looking AR. Period. Still looks "futuristic." Love it, thanks for sharing your dad's photo OP.

For the OP, thanks for sharing your dad's pic. WWII barrack; we had them at Ord. Reputedly a terror if they caught fire.
Got a NOS Colt A1 upper before it was a popular thing, and added it to a NoDak lower. Shoots great, and it really shook me up when I first held it when finished. And I never had to run thru' the jungle with the one the Gummint gave me in 1970; can't imagine how it would feel to a guy who took it in harm's way. Either way, we were young men then.

Yeah, love how light and simple the A1s (or even plain M16 as I had in basic) are. Pick up a Garand and then an AR...not hard to see what Stoner was doing.
