    Aug vs...

I am getting a bit bored and a touch nervous about what this coming election will bring so I recently started looking around for a must have "evil" rifle to pick up. I have quite a few SCAR, ARs etc andrecently picked up and love a Steyr Aug. I was thinking about a SAN 553, B&T APC223 \ 300 or a Bren 2 but I was wondering if maybe I shouldnt just pick up another Aug or some random accessories? Its super compact and a great functioning rifle. I think it matches up with the other Euro quality rifles listed above. If you have hands on with these I'd love your feedback as to a good pick.

I recommend a Swiss SIG 55x. They are iconic and very enjoyable to shoot. You already have an AUG. Pick up spare barrels, bolts, bolt sleeves, extractors, extractor pins, and firing pins for your AUG now while they are relatively inexpensive (aug parts have never been cheaper). I personally love the AUG. It too is iconic and a really interesting reference of very innovative iteration of the AR18 operating system. But I would personally diversify into other guns.

I am a fan of the B&T APC 223/300 and while I have less experience with the Bren, it’s a neat design and worth owning.

The SIG 550/551/553 is fantastic and a must have for anyone looking to round out a Euro rifle collection. I would start with it, further add to your collection as money permits. For full disclosure, I am a total 55x addict so your mileage may vary.

Unless you already own one, you’re crazy to pass up this ARX100 for $799...

Yes I agree. I just got one today. So many cool guns other then AR’s out right now. For the price, the ARX is tough to beat.

I agree with Josh on the SIG 55x recommendation, and I have had them ALL....My choice is the 551LB and the 553, but I have spent years building a magazine fort and spare parts bin. I have owned and loved many AUGs also. I would point out that magazines and parts for the AUG are much easier to get these days.

Are you actually saying SLRs are better than the Swiss 550 series? Because I own a lot of both. SLRs are not as accurate. True SLRs have commonality with other AK pattern rifles but who gives a crap. MP5s aren't great subguns because they have commonality with Uzis, MP40s and MPLs. That's a meaningless consideration.

Also everyone needs to get over the DI thing. If you push the M16/M4 platform past it's limits, it isn't carbon buildup that stops the rifle, the gas tube melts. That is the weak link, but even if you came out with some wonder gas tube that doesn't melt, the rifle would simply eventually catch on fire just like what happens when you push AKs past their limit.

The only time DI is an actual consideration is if you as a user simply don't want to clean the inside of your receiver and then you want a piston gun. But that means you are going to be cleaning gas ports and piston channels instead because that is where those rifles dump all their carbon emissions. And yes, even those rifles can fail due to carbon buildup in those areas which is why FALs have so many gas settings and most have an adverse conditions setting.

No matter what semi auto you are shooting, that stuff is going somewhere.

You lost me at AK better than Swiss SIG 55x.

Maybe the Swiss guns are better, which I would expect them to be but then again- they'd still be heavier than my SLR's. So I'd rather keep the lighter weight rifles, plus being able to swap recoil springs, extractor springs, small parts with other AKM's, Valmets or Galil's is a plus. However them being AK's, you can't swap barrels easily and they are now out of production. As far as AUG's, they will take a beating, easy to swap parts, and just about the most reliable rifles I've owned next to my AK's. I recently took one of my new LE6920's to the range, six malfunctions across four mags in under two hundred rounds- unreal. Then my new Colt 1911 was shooting four inches low during the same range trip- so it was not a good day. So looking over everything I own or owned, the AUG is in my top three.

The 556 is not at all the equivalent of the Swiss 55x. It’s analogous to comparing a NYC street vendor faux Rolex to a real Rolex. The Swiss rifles are so far beyond the US made iterations. Barrel changes are not hard if you have the armorers tools, which I do. And like TheAlsation, I have been stockpiling parts, barrels, mags, and tools for a long time. Spare barrels and spare parts are readily available (for now). It’s not difficult to stock up on the necessities.

I agree with you re: the AUG. Love it. I could give up all other 5.56 rifles and standardize on the AUG. If only Geissele would release their AUG trigger.

Re: your Colt 6920 experience, that’s an outlier in my (and generally everyone’s) experience. The whole “shit where it eats” AR thing is way overplayed and widely known to be nonsense at this point.

By the time I thought a few minutes about getting another they were sold out.

I wonder how many they got? I'll bet a couple dozen or less. I wonder if they were returns or factory blem guns that were fixed? Or perhaps send-backs from dealers?

According to a thread on TOS, they had 150+ and sold out over a couple days, but reappeared and disappeared again several times after that displaying “10+” each time until they were sold out and removed from the site.
