If I was starting now, based on cost of acquisition, cost of parts, and cost of magazines, I would go with an AUG. I have 60-80 magazines for the 550, but if I was starting now, at 70 bucks a pop, it would be hard to build up a stash. 42 rounders for the AUG are cheap by comparison. Either way, you won't go wrong. You could also look at the B&T offerings.
Swiss 55x mags are painfully costly right now. But I wouldn’t let that be a detraction. I started buying 55x mags back in 2004, immediately after the motherf$&@#ing Clinton ban sunset. I was ecstatic to find 30s for $50. In the years that followed I paid as little as $25 and as high as $65 per mag. I have slowly, steadily accumulated a frankly pathological number of Swiss mags. The point is, parts and mags can be purchased over time. The Swiss 55x series is a must own for any serious collector of military pattern rifles.
