This country is not worth defending. Change my mind

If people from all over the world can come here and build a good future, people in many cases get here with little to no english. Then your friend by hard work can build a future.

I think of my late friend Max who was a guest in 5 death camps. He came to this country with his new wife post WW2 not speaking a word of English. He built a company that made sheets and pillow cases, nothing high tech just a great product and a great price for hospitals. He became a millionaire, they started with his wife sewing in their little apartment and Max with his broken bad English going and making the sales.

So Please, move on with life.

I have lived in 2 countries in my life and visited a whole lot more. Been in every country in Europe, 19 in Africa, owned a farm in the Dominican.

America is in crisis right now and liberals have messed up a lot of things, but it is still number 1 in the world.

So the said person stole a car years ago and the felony is brought up every time a life change is afoot. It is a shame, I have to deal with a past as well. I'm sure we all do. But I believe this antic is present in every country on earth. It's the ideal that you can feed a million hungry kids in your life time, cool. But trip one kid one day as a joke and you are known forever as the asshole kid tripper. That does not make this whole entire country NOT worth defending. I'm not even saying "fighting" for. Because I'm not a believer in going out and picking fights. But it is so worth defending.

Having worked and lived abroad off and on for 12.5 years of my life in countries that will remain nameless (it was oil and gas work related) I can tell you for sure that America as we know it is worth defending. Maybe because they weren't my customs, but I can assure you that not one of countries I lived in before would be welcome to come out and say they are going to make a replica of their country out of the USA. We would be doomed. Nowhere else did I see a people with what we know as the American dream; corner lots with picket fences and tree swings, kids and dogs playing in the yards, barbecue grills going and people happily waving to one another as they travel about in their SUV's. Sounds cliche, but all that does exist outside of the media and big cities like MegemediC said.

Other places are too industrial, too cut and dry. Like there is no other option but to do what you were expected to do from birth. The people seem to exist for their government, not their family or personal passions. Everywhere I worked I saw people daily meander to their industrial job on their bikes or scooters, (their only possession) work 12 hours in nasty conditions only to go home to a single bedroom apartment, stacked on top of each other as far as the eye can see and eat the same glop they did the day before only to do it all over again the next day. 365 days a year. No vacation. No one had time or money for hobbies. And these are more or less free countries. It's truly sad to experience it and then come home and actually realize how much freedom we do have here. Despite having a rough past, people here CAN still get ahead. (With both of their hands still in tact and without scars on their back from lynchings).

The way I understand the OP was that if we were going to be forced to customize our country to ways that I've seen elsewhere, that it would not be worthwhile to defend it and rather just lay over and take it. I would say that is wrong. I'd defend in any way I could to keep things the way they are here. That's just me. YMMV.

Mistake or Crime? The type of crime which keeps you out of the military is usually a felony of some sort. For misdemeanors, waivers can be obtained - sometimes (in rare cases) a felony can get a waiver. Here is the thinking from the military:

"Persons entering the Armed Forces should be of good moral character. The underlying purpose of moral character enlistment standards is to minimize entrance of persons who are likely to become disciplinary cases or security risks or who disrupt good order, morale, and discipline".

So, besides serving in the military "thepatriot2702", is this said person unable to vote as well? Is this person unable to purchase a firearm via the NICCS check process? If this person is YOU, that would suck using the word Patriot in your name, and being unable to join the military, pass a background check for a gun, or not be able to vote in the United States of America. Your ability to do "patriot stuff" would really be limited.

You're being Mr Sour Grapes; because your "friend", who I suspect has a similar relation to you as Ben Kenobi had to Obi Wan, couldn't join the military because of something in his past, so therefore, you're now saying "who wants to fight for this stupid country anyway?" If the motivation to serve is simply that your "friend" is bored with his life and wants some adventure, then wishing death upon the entire nation is not the right attitude, and it's probably a good thing that "he" couldn't join. He gets sent somewhere to fight a battle he doesn't want to fight? "F**k this. I'm out!" Not a guy I would want to have my back!

This is where the stereotyping of millennials comes from. This self-centered attitude of "If I don't get what I want, than EVERYBODY needs to pay!" You think somewhere out there is a better country where the attitudes and views probably fit yours to a T. You think at some point America was near perfect, and we got away from that. Well, I have news for you: Apparently you didn't pay attention in your history classes, because if you did, you'd know that in our 200+ years as a nation, there has NEVER been a time where this country was worth preserving as it was in that time. We have ALWAYS been a work in progress, taking steps forward and steps back at various times. There was never a true Pax Americana. We have fought internally over slavery, racism, corporate greed, constant political corruption, income inequality, crony capitalism, socialism, civil rights, religious oppression, immorality...the list goes on. What we fight for is an idea. Something we haven't truly achieved yet, and probably never will due to human nature, but something that we keep moving towards nonetheless, because to not keep moving towards it would be disastrous.

But you know, it's all about you. You didn't get yours, so you want to see America burn, so that's fine.

I’ve been the biggest patriot for the longest time. However, life is cruel and I’ve begun to rethink it. What makes this country worth defending. We live in a society that is disgusting. Our society defines you by your past even if you made a genuine mistake. You have people trying to strip the constitution. You have truly degenerate behavior left and right, etc. What makes this country great? What still makes it worth defending?

Where else have ye lived?
