I'd imagine so, the JP SCS uses spacers for rifle/A5 length tubes

Yes. Back in day a manufacturer (maybe even Colt) made the spacer for running a 9mm upper, 9mm buffer (CAR length), and carbine spring in your A2 lower.

I'd always run a rifle spring and buffer in a rifle receiver extension for 5.56 though.

In short, the buffer isn't just there to slow the carrier and shove it back in, it's a hard mechanical spacer that prevents overtravel. Gotcha. For the record, I was asking in a theoretical "why the system is the way it is" context--I'm solidly in the A5 camp unless a build *requires* me to go either CAR or fixed-stock Rifle.

For my own builds, my arms are too short for a fixed, so on Rifle-length builds I'm A5 (custom) or CAR-H6 (A4 clone) all the way--dunno how I'm gonna make a Nam Spec work, but there had to be some Stubdudes in Indian Country so I'm sure there was a workaround.
