I have a lot of time on a 17&34. They're equal in all respects other than the very slightest difference in sight radius and the recoil is a little slower/softer than the 17.
A good comparison is the longer guns are more like a 20" rifle/A5, the smaller are more like a carbine/SBR.
I didn't see myself ever going the MOS route with it, so that pretty much ruled out the 34 because I wanted a Gen 5, but I did consider a 34.4. If I did want to run a dot on it, I'd have it milled, anyway. I've got a Surefire XC1-B on mine that I intended for my 19X and it sits well behind the muzzle of the 17.5 with no discernible effect on the throw of the light and it doesn't get as dirty while firing. That said, the brightness isn't "wow", so I'll probably end up putting an X300 on it. With the light and the 19X mag, the thing balances perfectly. I don't have any regrets about getting it over the 34...even though I still might get a 34 just for the hell of it.
This is a good question. People think G34s are like G17L length when they aren’t that much longer than a G17. Like a 1911 length vs a P226 length. Noticeable but not crazy.
Myself I used a Kydex then a SERPA duty rig. But I wasn’t shooting for GM. Just my own personal growth.
While I love the idea of the 19, it just never works out for me. The change in the back strap puts the hump in a spot in my hand that makes my recoil control noticeably worse with the 19. I've owned 3 (4 if you include a 23) and every time I buy one I say to myself "I'll do better this time". And every time I end up selling it.
So for me the 17 is very much still relevant.

No dude is going to get shot in the chest at 300 yards and look down and say "What is that, a 3 MOA group?"
