Today I qualified for the first time with a G17. Never shot a Glock in my life up until yesterday. Mind you, I just turned 55 and remember when Glock hit the scene back in 1986. Then I was working at B&B Gun Sales on Oxnard Ave. in North Hollywood. So that's how long it took me to pick up a Glock because I was forced to by my new employer. Tell You What!.... Glock 17 Gen 4 shot really well. Had to work on the trigger a bit, learn the break and it has a sweet reset. Did not have the muzzle flip like I thought it would. Have not shot a Glock 19, I do trust it shoots very similar to the G17. I will be adding one of these Glock's to the herd of Sig P226's in my safe... And I will make sure that my English Bulldog does not get a hold of it!

So for me the 17 is very much still relevant.
I suppose you could get a G45 and cut the grip down for 19 mags.

I certainly think that my G17 is still relevant and do have it in my rotation of carry guns. I am 5'8" and have no problem conceal carrying it. I also conceal carry my CZ75B as well. It is not the size of the person, but how you dress to carry.

If I had to have a short barrel 9 that's what I would do.

    Or just get a G19...?

I think for practical shooting, the G45 has made the G17 less relevant. If 1" of velocity and 'sight radius' is gonna save your life, well good on ya.

    It's actually more like 0.5".

The grip of a cut 17 is a lot different than a 19 or even a 17 grip. I like it better than both.

The difference between a 17&19 is .47", the 17 has a heavier slide, lighter
&longer recoil springs, and the barrel doesn't have to tilt as much to cycle.

All of those things are better from a reliability standpoint. It's not all about sight radius.

    G17 is the null hypothesis.

I've owned my Glock 17 since 1994 and it has been a totally reliable weapon. It was a combination birthday present and Army promotion gift for me from the wife. The only other Glock we have in the family is the wife's Olive Drab colored Glock 26. Also a fine weapon, but a little small for my hands.
