MP5 rear sight... peep vs notch

I have a Zenith MP5 and I find the rear peep sight to be rather slow to use. Even when using the big peep. Im thinking of buying the rear drum that has the notch settings so it will be similar to a handgun sight. Has anyone used both? Which do you prefer? Was the notch sight significantly harder to use at distance?

Castle (open notch) sight is for pistols. I cannot stand the castle sight with a stock and don't shoot my H&K's in anything other than SBR configuration. But I prefer the diopters for a PCC and find them extremely fast and intuitive to use.

If you are slow, retro's recommendation is right, go to a dot.

Yep, hate that castle sight, even on my K's I installed a standard MP5 diopter. If you are determined to go to a more open sight, install a G3 sight. I ran that on an MP5 for years, just keep in mind your other three peeps are going to be sorta tight.

Without seeing you mount the gun it's difficult to diagnose what the issue might be but from my time working as an Adjunct Instructor for HK ITD I can make a guess. If you are finding the standard diopter sights slow to use it is very likely a problem with your stock mount location (where you are placing it on your shoulder). Keep the stock close to the center line of your body. The gun should be directly under your dominant eye. Keep the toe of the stock just under your collar bone. When you mount the gun the sights should come to your eye...if you need to hunt for the sights tweek your stock/head position a bit.

Most people find the diopter sights to be very fast due to the eyes natural tendency to center the front sight hood within the rear diopter. Once you get used to it you won't even consider the notch drum. Hell, I've already ordered a diopter rear for the SP5 I plan on buying once I can find some cash.

You're going to see more vertical stringing with a notch type rear sight. If you're slow with that big an aperture, you're going to be at least as slow with a notch, and less accurate to boot.

Either something is wrong with your body/weapon alignment or you're expecting red dot speed from irons. When actually aiming with a long gun, red dot is always faster.

Thanks for the info. I'll work on my presentations some more.

I'm guessing from using the AR platform for nearly 20 years now and having 10s of thousands of presentations with it, I'm just dealing with a "muscle memory" issue.
