It may not be the Express to Ground Floor the fad-diet gurus recommend, but my docs want me to make slow and comfortable changes over a longer timeline so I'm more likely to stick with them. Also, avoiding fast-food in favor of at least "casual dining" helps a lot; most of the fast-food I eat now is Arby's roast beef sandwiches, and on those I throw the bread away and re-wrap the meat in a tortilla.
One thing I've been finding helps a lot is dumping sodas (okay, I have a couple swigs of Dr Pepper when I start the morning and a couple more at lunch, just enough to keep the caffeine withdrawal headaches away) in favor of flavored sparkling water like Cascade Ice; no carbs, no sugar, 5 calories or less, better flavor than tap water makes me more likely to drink it too.
