Either caliber will work. 5.56 is cheaper to shoot, but the 300 will let you go shorter reliably. If you decide on the 5.56, go with an 11.5" barrel or longer. If you decide on the 300, go shorter. A 300 BLK with a barrel about 7.5" or so is right handy. If you don't suppress your shortie, the BRT Covert Comp is your friend as it does a good job pushing the sound and muzzle blast down range.
