    Machine work to upper receiver

John Thomas recommended me a gunsmith to do this work. I ordered a super duty Geissele complete upper . The rail and upper receiver have a key lock tab for anti rotation purposes. Being a lefty I don’t like upper receivers with forward assists. I’m going to have him replace the factory Geissele upper with a vltor mur upper (no fa). He’s going to machine a recess into the vltor mur upper for the rail to lock into it with the key tab.

Would doing this to a vltor mur upper compromise or weaken the upper?

Never mind, I looked at your image. I thought you were talking about the anti rotation tabs.

Roger. I didn’t scroll down far enough before I commented. My uneducated guess would be that you would be able to mill the MUR without weakening anything. I highly doubt that Geissele had any super proprietary uppers forged for them in order to mill that slot out.

Post pics after it’s together, sounds like a robust setup.

That specific handguard is only available on a complete "Super Duty" upper.

    Ah, sorry.

Do you really think the juice is worth the squeeze?

Do you want the MUR for possible increases in accuracy?

Yes if it will not compromise the upper receiver it’s worth it to me to not have the forward assist. Geissele or some company produced upper receivers for their super duty uppers with these cutouts so I figured it would be safe for a competent gunsmith to do the same thing to a mur upper
