The first sticky part is trying to define what "universe" means, said David Kornreich, an assistant professor at Ithaca College in New York State. He was the founder of the "Ask An Astronomer" service at Cornell University.

"I don't know [the answer] because I don't know if the universe is infinitely large or not," he said. The observable universe appears to go back in time by about 13.8 billion years, but beyond what we could see there could be much, much more. Some astronomers also think that we may live in a "multiverse" where there would be other universes like ours contained in some sort of larger entity.

A 1995 exposure of a small spot in Ursa Major revealed about 3,000 faint galaxies. In 2003-4, using upgraded instruments, scientists looked at a smaller spot in the constellation Fornax and found 10,000 galaxies. An even more detailed investigation in Fornax in 2012, with even better instruments, showed about 5,500 galaxies.

Kornreich used a very rough estimate of 10 trillion galaxies in the universe. Multiplying that by the Milky Way's estimated 100 billion stars results in a large number indeed: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars, or a "1" with 24 zeros after it (1 septillion in the American numbering system; 1 quadrillion in the European system). Kornreich emphasized that number is likely a gross underestimation, as more detailed looks at the universe will show even more galaxies.

So refreshing to read REAL science. There is so much we don't know, it makes what we do know almost insignificant.

Agreed. If you're working with stones and you want to make a large structure, that's pretty much the shape that presents itself as your choice of shape. Gonna make a big square? Nope. Having said that and having seen some of the construction, I still can't fathom or wrap my head around humans moving 100, 200, 300 ton stones around in places they didn't even have the wheel yet. When you look at those blocks in person, and the fact they fit together so well you can't get a piece of paper between them and such, them doing that with ropes and levers or what ever becomes really difficult to believe I have to admit.

Honestly, I don't even think I could build Stonehenge TODAY even if you gave me some heavy equipment.

But true devotion to religions, lots of manpower and building upon mistakes (UFO types never show those early pyramids) allowed man to do some impressive stuff.

So refreshing to read REAL science. There is so much we don't know, it makes what we do know almost insignificant.

When the universe is made up mostly of matter we have very little understanding of (Dark matter) and is expanding due to a force we know nothing about (Dark Energy), it's a safe conclusion to make we don't know chit and at best, almost insignificant. So many people still think we're the center of it all.

I still think some knowledge or tech was lost over the centuries and not passed on. Maybe it was in the library of Alexandria and lost.
