    Oh I think they understand just fine. More red tape, more hoops to jump through, more government intrusion, more restrictions, more tracking and registering...more ways to run afoul of the law doing nothing at all that's actually wrong. That's what they want.

    My PPQ 9mm is already this way. Ser# is stamped on the barrel, the slide, and the frame. It was made in Germany, so maybe it's a German thing. My S&W 5906 is stamped only on the frame.

    Glock has put the serial on the frame, slide, and barrel for awhile (possibly always, would have to check), made in Austria or United States

    Aks also have sn on multiple parts.

    I always assumed it was continued from the days of hand-fit parts.
