    Alternate buffer tube question

I have a Colt LE6920 SOCOM. It currently has a 4-position mil spec buffer tube. I very much want to switch to a 6-position mil spec buffer tube due to I like the 2nd position on a 6-piece better. Could someone give me a reference on a good quality name buffer tube? I was a bit surprised the Colt didn't come with a 6-posiion tube to be honest but from what I understand it's not that difficult of a switch out. All information is much appreciated. Thank you.

There are a lot of fine choices. If specs matter to you, beware the phrase "mil spec", most of the time you see it, it's a lie. When it comes to receiver extension/buffer tubes, it usually means "mil spec diameter", which simply means that almost every stock on the market will fit it because it's the same outer diameter as a mil spec tube...but most of those are a lower quality material (6000 series aluminum and not 7075-T6) and probably have a lesser process for forming the threads, might be a difference in inside finish/smoothness or exterior coating as well. Just sayin

Thank you for the information. In shopping around, on the BCM site I've noticed you have to choose which weight of buffer kit you need. Do you know how to determine that on a Colt. Sorry if this question sounds dumb, I've just never replaced a buffer tube and I don't want to buy the wrong kind.

Also, do you think the entire buffer tube assembly would have to be replaced, or could I just replace the buffer tube itself?

I suspect your 6920 has an H buffer. Hence, all you need is a new buffer tube and a castle nut. You can try to reuse the end plate or buy a new end plate. You could get an EP that has a quick detach built into it. Measure your spring. If it is at least 10.3 inches long, it is probably good to go. However, a new spring is less than $5.00. How many rounds do you have through the gun? What are your plans for the gun? Training, classes, high round count, sitting in safe, 50 rounds a year??? Also, once you change the buffer tube and properly stake the castle nut, you can always change the buffer and or spring in less than a minute should the need arise. Or you could purchase the complete kit from Sionics which comes with a sprinco spring and EP.

Replacing just the tube should be fine. Take a look at Aero Precision's Enhanced--adds a lip to positively index on the buffer detent and support the carrier tail, drain-holes for wet environments and a ramped rear section makes getting a stock on easier. My biggest gripe is that unless the M5 version would work, they don't have one that's A5 compatible...

I checked, it's an H2 buffer. But I guess maybe just the buffer tube would be sufficient to replace. The BCM or the Daniel Defense models look pretty sturdy.

Are the buffer tubes that come with the SBA3 braces GTG?
    You won't outvote the corruption.

    They advertise it as 7075.

I bought an SBA3 for my BCM lower and slid it onto the existing tube that came on it. I used the SB tube on my Colt to replace the original 4 position...haven't had any issues.

Magpul has a quality made “mil-spec” buffer tube/receiver extension that is standard lenght but has 7 positions for even more adjustability. I have the A5 lenght which is 10 position and it’s of good quality.
