Which tells me they are not concerned with stopping entry of a relatively small number of infected US citizens. Implication being its already in enough US communities not to make a statistical difference.

That or we (US) are completely inept. I keep hearing people allude or state Italian ineptness...

Its already in Atlanta preschools and worse, a waffle house. It's here.

I hope its no worse than the flu or a cold as some state.
Border entry is no longer considered a large vector point. We have crossed the line where community spread is the main problem now. This is at least as infectious as the flu, but studies are showing somewhere between 2-4x as infectious (depending on vector controls applied locally).

As for symptoms, the majority of people under 60 will have very mild symptoms, if at all. Those that do have symptoms beyond mild will need hospitalization at a rate approaching 20%, with 25% of those needing intensive care according to some papers. The flu, by comparison, has a hospitalization rate of 0.9%. But the death rate of those 80 years and over is above 14%. The US has 12.6 million people over the age of 80. If just 25% of the US over 80’s cohort get infected, given current mortality rates that’s 466,200 deaths in that age group alone, with the assumption that the healthcare system has the capacity to handle all of the infected. And that’s the real issue - this can rapidly overwhelm the medical system within the next month if it spreads quickly enough.

The first case of corona was reported yesterday in Chattanooga. The priest began feeling ill and was diagnosed with pneumonia. A week later he learned that he had been exposed to corona while in Louisville Ky. At that time he had a corona test. It came back positive.

Priests have a lot of community contact.

Europe updates. OMG Ireland is closing the pubs!!!

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51897069

Germany will impose temporary controls on its borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark and Luxembourg on Monday to stop coronavirus spreading.

Other EU states are also taking radical action, with Austria banning gatherings of more than five people from Monday.

The Republic of Ireland is asking all pubs to shut until 29 March and schools in the Netherlands are to close.

In Italy, the number of deaths in a 24-hour period reached a new high, up by 368 since Saturday to reach a total of 1,809. Of those, 1,218 were recorded in the Lombardy region, which is home to the business hub of Milan.

Spain recorded 97 more deaths and 2,000 new cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's total death toll to 288 and overall number of cases to 7,753.

France, with 4,469 confirmed cases and 91 deaths, is holding local elections, despite the shutting of cafes, restaurants and most shops.

In Switzerland, the number of infections have leapt by 800 to reach 2,200 in just 24 hours.

The moves follow strict measures taken by France and Spain on Saturday.

Ohio’s Governor Mike DeWine just signed an executive order closing all bars and restaurants indefinitely. Establishments are still allowed to be open but only for carry out. DeWine was on CNN this morning and side he wouldn’t be surprised if Ohio schools would remain closed through the end of the academic year.

I feel this might do more harm than good. A lot of people are out of work as of 9pm tonight.

Ohio has 36 confirmed cases of covid-19, and in response the government put a large number of citizens out of work. I understand taking precautions but somehow I think we are really hurting ourselves with some of these decisions.

Specific to your Ebola comment, although Ebola as much deadlier, it's also much harder to get. That is a bloodborne pathogen, can only be passed through body fluids. Much much harder to get. Now if they could find a way to aerosolize or turn Ebola into an airborne disease, then we're talking something close to Armageddon.
The Soviets were working on crossing Ebola with smallpox and another effort to cross smallpox with anthrax so they could distribute it easily. Talk about end of the world...

36 confirmed cases means there are likely 100's of typhoid Mary's walking around spreading the virus, that's how this thing works.

Eh, I guess with the (once) booming economy they should be able to find jobs once this all pans out. But hey, the ComDems are calling for a mandatory income for all so maybe in November we won't have any more worries.
