Yes, that appears a key aspect of the immune response that leads to the tissue damage and sepsis. Per paper you had supplied, supported by various others:

"...body will accumulate too many harmful iron ions, which will cause inflammation in the body and increase C-reactive protein and albumin. Cells react to stress due to inflammation, producing large amounts of serum ferritin to bind free iron ions to reduce damage"

The body attempts to respond, but can't keep up, hence the uncontrolled cascade. There may be some approaches to control/mitigate that, including perhaps chloroquine, if not indirectly.

I'm also particularly interested how that relates to sepsis.

Who's confused about it? The vent settings Chuckman listed are pretty "high" (FiO2 100%, PEEP +18, with a PO2 of only 40), and since it's apparent oxygenation is a major issue with COVID-19 then alternatives to traditional VT/RR/PEEP administration can certainly be considered. ARDSnet is a guide, not the end-all/be-all of mechanical ventilation.

Just a quick note: If you significant other is in charge of food storage and she says the cupboard if full, you might want to make sure that she isn't squirreling away bags and bags of potato chips. Great comfort food for home lock down, but maybe not the best use of space...

I would say those are pretty "high" settings with only a PO2 of 40mmhg. This is a very serious virus.

None of those settings are that crazy for severe ARDS.

PaO2 is literally multiplied by 0.003 in determination of arterial oxygen content.
