The messaging on testing has been really piss poor. They need to start testing a metric ass load of people to be able to tell when the rate is actually going down. If you don't start testing people, it look like we are having rising numbers when they are coming down.

-China and SK getting back to work with out a flaring back up
-Germany getting its outcome to diverge from Italy.
-A refocusing from deaths to younger people f'd for life after having it.

I think half a million in the US isn't unbelievable, in that a lot of those deaths will come off of next years flu deaths. Some people keep saying that there is a lot more out there than we think there is, and maybe that is so, but the SK data doesn't bear that out. Hopefully it is true and we are getting more of a herd immunity than we realize, but I'd say that is a hope. 500,000 sounds horrible, more than the US deaths in the WWII- but 0.16 of the population- and mostly of old people? Perspective.

All I know is that the worm should turn on the Global Warming A-holes. Everytime Greta Thurnberg gets up and starts to talk someone should throw a roll of toilet paper at her and start screaming about the the real threat- pandemics. I'm sure they eventually will be able to spin it someway to be as anti-capitalist and wealth redistributing as the global warming program is.

SmartCare is a Drager product, my hospital uses Puritan-Bennett vents. But yeah, it is a special mode off the ordinary VT/RR/PEEP pathway. They certainly have their uses, and quite honestly those modes are not used very often but are big selling points when the sales reps are trying to convince you to purchase their products.

For instance the PB 840 has a software option called "Bi-Level". Basically delivers two levels of PEEP during the ventilatory process. We were rarely allowed to use it; so little in fact that I had to write down the instructions for implementing it and keep them in my work-wallet so I could turn it on if asked! BTW, it is a mode especially for oxygenation issues so when we ran into that sometimes the docs in SICU would ask for it. In MICU, however, they were ARDSnet uber alles and we never used it in that unit.

I wouldn't doubt it.

Apparently, Kansas clarified and stated they weren't going to be "closing" for the year, just the facilities are closing with online/home schooling being mandatory to complete the year.

However...

It's not going to be that simple especially when you have rural areas and farms that just might not have the best internet connections in the world. I'm also reminded of that scene from Talladega Nights where the kids are running around shouting "Anarchy!" and causing all sorts of mischief.
