The reality is that if we’re concerned about morbidity and mortality, a worldwide depression is much more likely to **** up the world than a virus that only causes SARS in a small minority of cases.

Depressions lead to starvation, poverty, and widespread suffering. They lead to poor innovation. Less charitable giving. The economic interests being shattered are likely going to be a real and memorable legacy long after the deceased are forgotten.

Certainly it is well-known that we have very few advanced masks, such as N95s and even fewer powered air systems ("space suits"). But just the routine, run of the mill masks that your dental hygienist wears or the nurse in the clinic wears or the surgeon in the operating room wears are dwindling. There are efforts from across the globe in developing ways to stretch our supplies further, primarily through re-use of single use items. Lots of ideas are circulating about new strategies, including using diving masks and modified SCUBA equipment to get by. The editor of JAMA just asked for suggestions. Reminds me a little of the scene in Apollo 13 where the scientists brainstorm about solving the CO2 scrubbing problem. Stay safe out there!

But everybody here got mad at me for saying not to hoard it. Hmmm. We are doing homemade masks, reusing masks, etc. maybe the guys sitting on 300 N95s for himself should go donate to the nearest hospital. It’s a dick move to those who are risking their lives to care for you and your family at risk. This isn’t a “as long as I got mine” situation not is it a “they should have been hoarding it for themselves years ago” situation.

My thoughts exactly. The virus will be a problem for SOME (including possibly me, hopefully not.). The economy will be a problem for nearly ALL. (Except for the hundreds of CEOs that have coincidentally stepped down in the past few months, nothing to see there)

You mean folks out there doing their jobs the same as they would be irrespective of this COVID19 ordeal?

There are enough self absorbed Karen’s in the world as it is, we don’t need anymore.

Doing your job does not a hero one make.

Nope, but we can’t do our jobs without the gear people are letting collect dust in their bunkers.

Honest question, do you want the nurse or RT infecting you’re sick parents with something that may kill them because they didn’t have the proper PPE for the last room they were in?

Hospital acquired infections are a thing, and they are much worse in instances with shortage of supplies.

Hoarding shit you don’t need makes you an asshole. Just like those without babies buying diapers and baby wipes in mass. You may have a right, but it doesn’t make it right.

I’d prefer some common sense all around but that is unfortunately few and far between.

Trying to appeal to my emotion is a non starter also so

As to the hoarding bit how much stuff was already out in the consumer pipeline when all this stuff going down? It’s not like manufacturers were going to recall shipments and divert them as needed. Sitting on 500+ n95s in ones basement is lame but its also lame how most hospital systems like to lend greater deference to administrator salaries and bonuses and other lame initiatives than actually prioritizing their core functions. Obviously government in part shoulders the blame on this one.

In any case my comment was not about simply needing the tools to do ones job (that’s a given regardless of profession) and more about folks assigning themselves some self-anointed sense of nobility or heroism for literally doing their JOB. It’s in very poor taste imo. But I get it a lot of docs (in general) see themselves as gods gift to humanity so it is what it is. Hell nurses do too nowadays so, whatever.

While surgical masks still superior, even home made masks better than nothing:

"Twenty-one healthy volunteers made their own face masks from cotton t-shirts; the masks were then tested for fit. The number of microorganisms isolated from coughs of healthy volunteers wearing their homemade mask, a surgical mask, or no mask was compared using several air-sampling techniques. The median-fit factor of the homemade masks was one-half that of the surgical masks. Both masks significantly reduced the number of microorganisms expelled by volunteers, although the surgical mask was 3 times more effective in blocking transmission than the homemade mask. Our findings suggest that a homemade mask should only be considered as a last resort to prevent droplet transmission from infected individuals, but it would be better than no protection."

Yup. Don’t disagree at all. Being many members of the family are medical, Granny’s Sweat Shop is open for business.

No really I want the asshat that orders PPE for the hospital strung up.
Someone bought 250 masks a year ago and put them in storage and they are the problem?
No really it doesn't work like that.

Nobody needs guns but the Police and Military, turn them in.
Doesn't sound quite right when you say it that way does it?
A lot of other occupations and hobbies use those same masks and unless you bought them after the hospital stock went red no problem.

If you can combine it with a plastic face shield, which at least can be re used, greatly improves it from what I'm reading. Med staff running low or out of basic essential stuff like face masks already, is massive fail. That's some BS right there.
