Health officials have recommended cheap, abundant, and generally accurate NATs as one of 2 main methods to confirm the presence of the coronavirus in humans. The technique involves collecting samples from patients and testing them for specific kinds of molecules that appear in the genetic material of the new coronavirus. If those molecules are present in the sample, the patient is isolated for treatment. But there is growing concern that those NATs are producing large numbers of false negatives. In a Wednesday [5 Feb 2020] interview with state broadcaster CCTV, Wang Chen, an expert in critical diseases and director of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, said one characteristic of the virus was that "not all of those infected by it return positive NATs."

"Even patients who definitely have the disease only come back positive 30%-50% of the time," Wang said. "Testing throat swabs (from potentially infected people) also returns a lot of false negatives."

The ProMed coverage and the issue of the testing are more nuanced than it appears. Asking for solid testing processes, especially the necessary reagents, in 40 days since the Novel pathogen outbreak was identified is not realistic.

In a related point, Chinese researchers issued an impressive report on Sunday, Feb. 9 based on 1,099 nCOV cases. They found “20.9% patients have isolated 2019-nCoV infection before or without the development of viral pneumonia”.

While the report is not peer reviewed, it will likely be the best epidemiological report for some time. Here’s the high points:

1. 1,099 patients with 2019-nCoV ARD from 552 hospitals in 31 provinces/province-level municipalities (a lot of places)

2. The median incubation period was 3.0 days (range, 0 to 24.0) – note up to 24 days incubation

3. The percentages of patients being admitted to the ICU, requiring invasive ventilation and death were 5.00%, 2.18% and 1.36%, respectively.

4. Conventional routes of transmission of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and highly pathogenic influenza consisted of the respiratory droplets and direct contact [17-19].Collectively, fomite transmission might have played a role in the rapid transmission of 2019-nCoV, and hence hygiene protection should take into account the transmission via gastrointestinal secretions.

5. 20.9% patients have isolated 2019-nCoV infection before or without the development of viral pneumonia

6. Notably, fever occurred in only 43.8% of patients on initial presentation and developed in 87.9% following hospitalization. Absence of fever in 2019-nCoV ARD is more frequent than in SARS-CoV (1%) and MERS-CoV infection (2%) [19] and such patients may be missed if the surveillance case definition focused heavily on fever detection

My best friend lives in Hong Kong. I sent him these to see if his wife knows what they are saying. In HK they speak cantonease and in wuhan its manderin so idk If she'll understand.

I saw a video a while back where they were welding bars across the door of a apartment to keep people in, good times.
