Quebec spent much of the 1970s under martial law. The present Prime Minister’s father was a typical Québécois in WWII, refusing to fight with Britain. The Québécois in the Canadian Army actually rebelled against the thought of fighting Nazis. Not all, but a significant amount of the leftist hardcore Québécois political leaders hated the Brits more than the Nazis. The Québécois were only forced to fight after Normandy, when the fall of Hitler was assured.
Lots of English-speaking Canadians were bled white waiting for their Francophone colleagues to join the war. There was another mutiny in the closing days of the war, where Francophone sailors refused to attack Japan.
These were the same folks who refused to fight in WWI and WWII, organized the 1970’s terrorism and drive the internationalist sentiment of today. It is a country at war with itself; the politicians have been trying to keep it together for well over 250 years.
There are awesome soldiers and tough SOBs in Canada - fighting from the Boer War to the GWOT. Don’t write them all off.
