Probably because the terminal ballistics are pretty good, even out of very short barrels and he doesn’t plan on shooting through glass. Additionally the velocity delta between short and long barrels has an inverse relationship with projectile weight. Doorkickers with Mk18’s have been known to reappropriate the snipers’ ammo for these reasons. I won’t say that the 77gr SMK is the best projectile, but its pretty good.
Fusion is capable of acceptable accuracy and expands at very low velocity. In my opinion, Fusion MSR is one of the best commercial loads for waxing two-legged vermin at any range a plain M4 and ordinary shooter are suitable for. Its also widely available and inexpensive. I keep 7 mags of it on hand.
I can’t talk about 700yds, but 68/69 gr works well for me out to 500m, which is usually the furthest I shoot. I’m just shooting man size steel and E-Type pop-ups. I like the 68/69 projectiles, because the velocity with 5.56 is close to 70gr TSX 5.56 and .223 62gr Fusion MSR. This keeps POI close enough at the shorter ranges I use those two at. I use the Hornady Frontier5.56 68gr, and I’ve also had good results with Black Hills 69gr SMK 5.56. FGMM .223 69gr SMK groups well out of every rifle I’ve tried it in, but its slower than I prefer. I really want to try the Black Hills 69gr TMK.
I would not choose 69gr SMK or TMK for terminal effects, because it is inferior at that.
